December 6th clash of Texas 6A titans ended in a hard-fought double digit win for South Grand Prairie. Their opponent, Plano East field a strong roster but shooting struggles wouldn’t allow them to string enough runs together to win. Nearly halfway through both of their seasons, their prospects are coming into their own.
For Plano East Donavia Hall flexed her vocal leadership muscle way before the tip. I could hear the sophomore checking in on teammates in shoot around making sure they were working to their full potential. Hall didn’t have the best scoring performance, but she knocked down two threes at a high clip and made a strong move to the basket for two points. She’s really improved as a passer making all the right plays to get teammates in position to make plays.
Kendall McGruder looked so fluid as a lead guard. The 5-9 South Grand Prairie junior shot the ball well from three while showing off her passing IQ. She moved well off the ball always looking for a scoring angle she could take when the ball swung her way. McGruder sent defenders flying using jab steps and shot fakes out of the triple threat. She played a complete game using her length to contain drives and skate around picks.
Camryn Hill is
incredibly versatile on the offensive end of the floor for South Grand Prairie. Hill shot 3 for 5 from three with a quick, effortless release. Thanks to a few sets she flashed the ability to finish over her right shoulder and through contact. She truly looks to be a reliable three level scorer knocking down all of her free throws as added evidence.
Taylor Haggan dominated everything within 5 feet of the basket. She rebounds, scores through defenders, and runs the floor. Haggan’s physical stature and soft hands are a lethal combination at this stage in the game. The freshman panther has a bright future ahead of her.
Kiara Jackson is exactly South Grand Prairie needs at combo guard. The 5-7 guard is a long ball handler that creates her shot with efficient moves. When Jackson operated pick and rolls she read the floor leaking into scoring opportunities for everyone around her.
Ebonee Kyle plays with a slick handle that allows her to slip through defenses. Once she puts the ball on the floor, she’ll be in the lane going for two or dishing out to one of her panther teammates.
Adabugwu Anamekwe looks the part of a high-level wing. She’s fluid, agile with size to match up with guards and forwards. Only a sophomore for Plano East she still needs molding but all of those physical attributes highlight a ton of potential.
Idara Udo of Plano East plays a stellar game for a freshman. Standing six feet tall, she has a strong frame and uses it to create space when rebounding. She’s extremely coordinated for her age and flashes major ball skills. If she continues to develop that, she’ll be a mismatch combo forward ready to dominate the local high school scene.
Shooters shoot and that’s exactly what Vasana Kearney does. She shot 40% from three of five attempts and her South Grand Prairie teammates didn’t bat an eye. The effortless jump shot must be automatic for the 5-8 sophomore.
Nxerro Maluw is a walking ball of potential. The six-footer is long and mobile but not coordinated enough to put it all together. As the game comes to her, she could be this South Grand Prairie’s diamond in the rough.
