Positional Breakdown: 2022 Shooting Guards
Our updated rankings for the 2022 class is now out. We pushed the number of shooting guards ranked from 20 to 21 and saw just a big of movement within the top five. Below you can find the positional rankings for each player as well as a breakdown of the position overall. I’ll also highlight three players who have a good chance to move up by the end of the season.
The off-ball guard group in the 2022 class is relatively weak compared to the other positions in the class. Rieker stands alone at the top with Beckmann not too far behind. Sievers rounds out the top three and she has a high ceiling with room to continue to grow and move up. After those three it gets a little more bunched up with a lot of really solid combo guards. Beier, Struchen, Gossling, and Camden can all shoot the ball at a very high level but they can also run the offense well. There is quite a bit of potential in these top seven guards. After those you then have a lot of unknowns for various reasons. Gipple, Buchan, and Mayfield are all players who have shown bright flashes but haven’t consistently been able to perform at a high level. A lot of these guards are so close together and the difference between being #10 or #20 is not much at all.
Emma Gipple Emma Gipple 5'8" | SG Dowling Catholic | 2022 State IA is a very solid guard for Dowling Catholic. She looks much more confident with her play this winter and seems to be more confident in her play so far this season. She’s a dynamic guard who can score the ball really well, handle it, and is a very solid defender. Gipple has improved quite a lot over the past year.
Macie Downing Macie Downing 5'7" | SG Johnston | 2022 State IA doesn’t get a lot of run for a loaded Johnston team but she proved herself over the summer as a very viable option at the guard spot. She has a solid basketball IQ and can make plays both with and without the ball. I think she is a solid defender with the ability to guard both guard spots very well too.
Emma Anderson has been a big part of the Woodward-Granger success this season. She is an aggressive guard who can take the ball to the rim or shoot it from the outside. She can slide between both guard spots really well but I think her ability to guard those bigger players helps her be able to play on the wing as well.
