Standing at six feet tall, Northfield sophomore Giavonna Meeks standing is a rising post player with the ability to grab the boards among the best of them in Colorado. She can get to her spots inside at will with her strength and physical play. Meeks has been improving every year, and she loves the game of basketball.
Meeks is an up-and coming player that should be on the radar as she continues to develop her game.
Meeks averaged 5.8 points per game, 10.3 rebounds per game as the Lady Nighthawks posted a record of 10-14 last season. The team has started off the 2019-20 season with a 4-1 record. Meeks leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game, and is shooting 42 percent from two-point field goal range. Early on, the sophomore looks like one of the most improved post players in Colorado and has certainly impressed her coach.
“She’s a natural leader who leads by example anytime she steps on the court,” Northfield head coach Ernest Jones said. “She tirelessly works at her craft and getting better. This young lady works so hard to be the best student-athlete she can be. She’ll live in the gym if you let her. She’s worked so hard on her footwork and fundamentals. Now she’s a player that is a handful in the post not only to guard, but to keep off the glass.”
Meeks is a relentless rebounder, which is how she her stands out most during games, and could develop into one of the top rebounders in state if she continues to dominant the glass like she has been. Meeks also shows the ability to make the correct reads while inside the paint, and she can knocked down a mid-range shot if you leave her open. It will be great to follow Meeks has she continues to raise her stock as a player.
Jones adds, “Watching where she has come from to where she is now makes me so proud of how much Giavonna and her her game has matured in the past year. Every coach dreams of coaching a player like her. She makes my job so much easier. This past summer Giavonna had an amazing summer. She showcased her new skills offensively to go along side her rebounding expertise. Which put us in a position to have a very great summer with great showing in the team camps and leagues we participated in. She’s added a fade away jumper that can’t be stopped along with other post moves with her back to the basket. The sky is the limit with this young lady and she has the work ethic and skills to make it very far in this sport and to play at a very high level.”
