Growing up, we all find love for different things in life that we experience and are introduced to. It’s always interesting to hearing a young athlete’s story of how their love for the game was grown. We asked Dani when and why she feel in love with the game of basketball.
” I fell in love with basketball as soon as I started playing it, I played other sports but when I started playing basketball it was immediately my favorite. I started playing when I was in kindergarten. My biggest influences would be my mom, because she always talked to me about how much she loved the game. I also looked up to Ivana Catic, who played at KU and coached me as I was growing up. ”
Dani played for Kansas Elite grassroots program most of her club years but also had a stint with Eclipse early in her career. By playing with these grassroots programs she was able to learn, grow and develop into the player she has become.
“My favorite tourney is for sure Chicago because of the environment and how many teams come to play.”
Winslow has played varsity since her freshman year at Olathe South. She’s been one of the key players for the Falcons who plans to contend for a conference title and hopes to make a run to state as well. Dani is a lengthy versatile wing with the ability to play multiple positions on the court. Shows good ball-handling skills, that allow her to penetrate to finish or dish to teammates. A solid player with her back to the basket which adds depth to ways she can produce. An underrated defender that uses her length to guard both on the interior and on the perimeter.
“I think my strengths are my defense and my versatility when it comes to my height and my speed and being able to attack the rim. I could improve on my outside shot, mid-range and three’s and just getting more consistent with these”
South currently has a 2-2 record with losses to Nixa High School and Olathe East High School, yet defeated tough Barstow and Olathe Northwest teams. She’s currently averaging 15pts, 8rbs, 3ast and 3stls. Despite, producing great numbers already Dani has set some more goals for the season she shared with us.
” My goals this season would be to improve as a leader since I’m a senior and to work on every aspect of the game to prepare me for college ball and to help my team get as far as we possibly can.”
You can see Winslow and the Lady Falcons in action this Thursday December 19th, 2019 away at Leavenworth High. Game is set to start at 5:45pm.
