Continue ReadingAfter a strong offseason on the summer circuit, Columbia Hickman point guard Maci Kuchta is gearing up for a big season with the Lady Kewpies.
A 5’3 point guard, Kuchta likes to play a fast paced style of play. She runs the floor well, enjoys the drive and kick game and can pull up from 3-point range. Kuchta has terrific court vision and the ability to distribute the ball. She is coming off a season in which she averaged 12.6 points, including several games of more than 20 points.
“I definitely filled a bigger role last year both in scoring and leadership wise and I look forward to seeing what this year brings,” she says.
Kuchta spent the offseason running with 17U Missouri Phenom Columbia and says the experience has helped prepare her for the upcoming season.
“We traveled to many different states and large tournaments in preparation for this year,” she says. “We had college level practices and many elite players coming back to help us train. After playing with my team this summer I can confidently say that I’m the most ready I have ever been for my senior year and beyond.”
After going 7-19 a year ago, Kuchta says she hopes Hickman can continue to grow and improve this upcoming season.
“I am hoping to really surprise people,” Kuchta said. “We lost Emma Chapman last year and she was a huge help on both ends of the floor. However, I think we have a great group of girls this year that we can build of off and hopefully be a 500 team this season. A match up I’m definitely looking forward to is playing against Hannah Nilges from Jeff City. She also plays for Phenom and we get very competitive.”
Kuchta says Greg Logsdon and Devin Griffin have had the biggest impact on her basketball career to date.
“Greg has been my summer Coach for 4 years now and had a huge impact in my recruiting and has made me a better person and player just by being around him,” Kuchta says. “Devin has been my trainer since day 1. He has been a huge support system to have and has helped improve my game tremendously since I first started working with him. Both of these guys have been my biggest fans and believed in me and my ability from the beginning.”
A fan of Carsen Edwards, Kyrie Irving, Grayson Allen and Maya Moore, Kuchta says she enjoys watching guards play to see how she can improve her own game.
“They all are great at their own things but Edwards specifically stuck out to me because of his career at Purdue, he has incredible hesitations and change of speed moves I would love to add to my game,” Kuchta says.
A William Penn commit who plans to sign officially soon, Kuchta held offers for both basketball and track, including William Woods and Culver-Stockton.
