Continue ReadingA rising player in Kansas’ 2022 class, Olathe North guard Sania Copeland is off to a big start to her sophomore season, scoring 24 points in the Eagles’ opener against rival Olathe East.
At 5’7, Copeland is a solid, unselfish leader who can shoot from the outside and knows how and when to score.
A year ago, Copeland averaged 12 points per game as a freshman and helped Olathe North finished 16-6 and advance to the Kansas Class 6A quarterfinals where they fell to Washburn Rural.
“Last year at Olathe North HS I feel we had a pretty good season,” Copeland said. “We didn’t get to achieve our main goal to win state but we certainly got there. I feel I did well for my freshman year as a starting Varsity player, but I feel I definitely could have done better.
“All I know is that this year is our year and I am coming different my sophomore year.”
Copeland joined KC Lady Run GMC to compete on the Under Armour circuit after the second tournament of the offseason and says the experience has helped prepare her for her sophomore season and perhaps beyond.
“I decided to switch it up and go to not only a new team but a whole new circuit,” she says. “It was a change but I’m glad it happened because my new team really depended on me. It taught me how to play through challenges/adversity and made me a better leader, which I can use for the school season, since that was something I believe we lacked last year.”
Copeland says her dad has had the biggest influence on her basketball career.
“He is always teaching me new things to make me a better player,” Copeland said. “My whole life I’ve been watching my dad play and I really appreciate everything he does and teaches me. I honestly play the game for him. Well of course for myself too because I love the game but I really just want to make him proud, after all the time, faith and dedication he puts into me.”
Copeland says she enjoys watching a wide range of players, including WNBA standout Skylar Diggins among others.
“I enjoy watching anyone who has a love for the game,” Copeland said. “I just love how much they put into basketball and how they define who they are by the way they play. I really enjoy watching Skylar Diggins play because of her fearlessness and how she sees the court.
“Whenever she has the ball you already know its a bucket. I have been able to implement what she does in my own game like I Have learned and attempted a couple of moves to the basket that she does so smoothly. I really look up to her. She is also a left handed hopper and I am too! I hope one day my name can be as big as hers and I truly think it can be.”
