Recap: Fairfax Rebel Round Ball Classic Day One
It’s the most wonderful time of the most wonderful time of the year. The days between Christmas and New Years always gift us loads of great games in the form of tournaments. At Fairfax High School, eight teams including the host school tipped off yesterday and gave us lots of great action and takeaways as we head into 2020 and the rest of the winter season.
Marshall and Hayfield began the day with a game full of youngsters showing us who’s on the rise, and top players reasserting their talents. Kendall Dunham Kendall Dunham 5'5" | PG Bishop Ireton | 2022 State VA (2022) carried Hayfield in the first half, scoring almost all of their points in the first quarter and giving the Hawks a double-digit lead at the half with her 16 points. She finished with 26 total.
The Statesmen woke up in the second half though. Zoe Soule led them on defense, intercepting passes and sparking fast breaks while also scoring 10. Christina Trivisonno led Marshall in scoring with 18. They pulled out the win 45-40.
The day continued with WCAC member Bishop O’Connell taking on a short-handed Chantilly squad. The Chargers had to fare without starting post Sophie Pavlech who’s had a solid season thus far. Freshman guard Sarah Huffman was inserted into the starting lineup and held her own against O’Connell’s tough starting guards. Chantilly got to within single digits of O’Connell in the second half, but the Knights pulled away in the end and got the victory 58-42.
The last game I caught was Langley and Flint Hill. Most impressive from this contest was Langley’s bench play. Bella Holloman (2020) and Summer Thomas (2021) for Langley came off the bench into a game that started kind of slow to spark the Saxons. They used a balanced attack and good, patient ball movement to break down Flint Hill’s defense and get good looks for shooters like Taylor Maguire and post ups for forward Marya Mufti. They improved to 4-3 on the season with the win, 44-28.
To wrap up the day, Fairfax beat Battlefield by playing stellar defense down the stretch. A good pass from Kaylin Prestosh leading to a Molly Brunk layup in the final seconds sealed the game for the Rebels.
Games continue today at Fairfax and will wrap up tomorrow evening.
