Several top teams went at it, and players had great performances on all sides. Here is a recap of all the day’s action.
Anderson County vs Elizabethtown
E-Town defeated Anderson 54-50 in a game that was close throughout, coming down to the final seconds. Freshman center Xaviara Smalley led the way for the Panthers, scoring 19 points and pulling down 12 rebounds, 9 of which came on the offensive end and resulted in many easy put-backs. Junior guard Kayra Freeman contributed 16 points and 5 rebounds, and senior guard Elizabeth Taylor added 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, making some key free throws down the stretch. For Anderson, sophomore guard Amiya Jenkins was the standout with 18 points on the offensive end and 4 steals on defense for a great two-way game. Junior guard Tiffany Riley filled the stat sheet as well with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and a block, doing a little bit of everything for the Lady Bearcats.
Conner vs Lexington Catholic
Conner defeated hosts LexCath by a score of 57-35. The Lady Cougars got into a good rhythm on both ends early and only got better from there. They showed a terrific inside/outside combination. Senior bigs Tyra Murphy and Maddie Drummonds dominated the inside. Murphy totaled a team-high 21 points, and 11 rebounds, showing shooting ability with some mid-range jumpers while Drummonds added 18 points, and 5 rebounds, as well as strong interior defense. Senior guard Emily Zorich lit it up on the perimeter, ending up with 16 points, including 4 made 3’s and added 4 steals on the defensive end. LexCath had some good performances in their loss. Junior guard Farah Weston had 7 points, 2 steals, a rebound, and an assist, junior forward Emma Frank had 4 points, 6 rebounds, and a steal, and sophomore forward Peyton Mayo had 6 points and 2 rebounds.
Christian Academy-Louisville vs Boyd County
Christian Academy defeated Boyd 74-63 in a game that had plenty of offensive firepower. While Boyd made it rain from outside in the 1st half, CAL’s high powered attack overwhelmed them in the 2nd half. The Lady Centurions featured great scoring from senior forward Shelby Calhoun with 19 points to go along with 4 assists and an outstanding 18 boards. Senior guard Mia Beam added 17 points, including 5 made 3’s, and junior guard Sydney Raque contributed all around with 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists. Boyd’s excellent outside shooting was led by junior guard Bailey Rucker and her 24 points on 6 made 3’s. Junior guard Harley Paynter also had a strong game with a 19 point, 10 rebound, 2 steal performance. Senior guard Graci Opell showed out on the other end with great defense that included 2 steals and 2 blocks.
Webster County vs Paul Laurence Dunbar
Paule Laurence Dunbar defeated Webster County 50-45. Dunbar’s balanced attack and playmaking defense were too much for Webster to overcome, although the Lady Trojans stuck around until the very end. The Lady Bulldogs were led by strong performances both scoring and on the boards, including junior forwards Elise Ellison-Coons with 11 points and 14 rebounds, Haley Gadd with 8 points and 8 rebounds, and Tanaya Cecil with 8 points and 7 rebounds. Perhaps their most impactful player was sophomore guard Aziah Campbell, who had 7 steals and 3 blocks in a superb defensive showing. Senior guard Marissa Austin was the clear standout for Webster, coming away with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals, doing everything for the Lady Trojans. Senior forward Dezeray Browder had a strong game as well, ending up with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals, getting to the rim well throughout.
