Both semifinals were contested by teams and players that have already shown their tremendous abilities this weekend, creating two excellent matchups. There were also some fun games between teams that have been eliminated from the top bracket that I was able to see due to the lighter schedule today. Here’s what all happened and which players led their teams.
Elizabethtown vs Simon Kenton
Simon Kenton defeated E-Town 63-46. SK controlled this one throughout with excellent ball movement and great shooting on offense, and strong defending that made everything difficult for the Panthers. Perhaps most importantly, the Lady Pioneers took away E-Town’s offensive rebounding, which had been one of their keys to success thus far. Sophomore center Sereniti consistently got a balling on E-Town’s freshman center Xaviara Smalley, taking her out of the game. Webb ended up with 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists to go with her superb defensive performance. Senior guards Maggie Jones, Morgan Stamper, and Mattie Vickera led the scoring and perimeter defense for the Lady Pioneers. Jones had 20 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals, Stamper had 16 points and 4 rebounds, and Vickers had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block. Junior guard Kadie Schawe also pitched in some strong defense with 4 steals and 5 rebounds, making it a full team effort. For E-Town, junior guard Kayra Freeman was their most effective weapon, totaling 13 points and 2 assists, while freshman forward Kenzie Franklin had a nice game with 9 points and 4 rebounds.
Christian Academy-Louisville vs Paul Laurence Dunbar
CAL defeated Dunbar 58-47. While Dunbar battled the whole game and never let things get out of hand, CAL’s skill and athleticism were simply too much for them. Senior Shelby Calhoun was once again the star for the Lady Centurions, controlling the game and showcasing her all her abilities by leading the team in every statistical category with 14 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals. Senior guard Mia Beam and Sophomore guard Jaya McClure ended up tied for the CAL in scoring as well at 14 points apiece, with Beam scoring from all levels and McClure doing a great job getting to the rim and finishing, as well as grabbing 6 rebounds. For Dunbar, sophomore Aziah Campbell again stood out, scoring 15 points to go with 3 steals and a block while playing the best defense on Calhoun so far in this tournament. Junior Tanaya Cecil was the game’s top scorer with 18 points, most of them the result of her knocking down 3 pointers. Junior forward Elis Ellison-Coons had a nice game as well, scoring 10 points, pulling down 8 rebounds, and showing some great passing with 6 assists, and playing some nice defense with 2 steals.
I was also able to check out two other games down the bracket today featuring some teams that lost their first game before winning their 2nd.
Anderson County vs Wayne County
Anderson defeated Wayne 50-41 in a game that was closer than the score, as Anderson knocked down their free throws late to put it away. The Lady Bearcats won with good ball movement to find open shots on offense, and stingy inside defense. Junior Tiffani Riley played particularly well on the interior, swatting quite a few shots at the rim. Sophomore guard Amiya Jenkins did a great job attacking the rim, while juniors Rachel Satterly and Anna Foley and sophomore Paige Seraphini all shot well. Wayne was led by sophomore forward Mallory Campbell, who battled inside throughout and found the most success, and junior guard Macey Blevins, who ran the offense and rebounded exceptionally well for her position.
Webster County vs Boone County
Webster defeated Boone in a game that was close down to the wire. While Boone created plenty of turnovers, Webster found success scoring inside, and Boone couldn’t make the shots they needed to on the other end. Senior guard Marissa Austin led the scoring for Webster, including the go-ahead and-1 in the final minute, while senior Dezeray Browder also did a great job scoring inside, as well as rebounding and making some nice hustle plays. Junior guard Skylar Holder excelled for Boone, coming up with a number of steals and getting inside at will, resulting in scoring and nice passes. Junior forward Kelsie Anderson got open and scored well in addition to strong rebounding, and senior guard Alissa Avila paid some excellent passes for the Lady Rebels.
In a game I was just able to catch the end of, Boyd County defeated Highlands in overtime. Junior Harley Paynter hit the game-tying shot at the buzzer and played extremely well in overtimes to lead Boyd to victory.
