She was able to show off some of her strengths as a player in the paint a year ago and continue to work on getting stronger and scoring around the basket.
At 6’3, Culliton averaged 10.8 points, 7 rebounds and shot 60 percent from the field in her first varsity season helping Aquinas win a Class 5A state championship.
“At St. Thomas Aquinas I had great teammates, senior leaders and great coaches to help me,” she said. “I feel that I did well throughout the season, and there are definitely some things I am working on but overall I feel I did my best to help my team in the ways that I could.”
Aquinas is off to a 4-0 start this season and expectations are high for the Lady Saints.
“I think our team has really good chemistry, and we play very well together on the floor. I’m looking forward to most of our matchups this season, because we play a lot of ranked teams in the Kansas City area,” Culliton said. “Each game we play should be a good one, and I’m excited to see how my teammates and I will handle each one.”
Cullinton is coming off a strong spring and summer running with the Missouri Phenom 16U EYBL team and says the experience has helped her game grow.
“It was awesome, I had a bunch of great teammates who are going to be life-long friends, and they were also some really great basketball players,” she says. “I also had some really great coaches. I think this summer was kind of a turning point in my game, some things started clicking and I figured out different aspects of my game that I can make stronger. I think the intensity and competition of AAU ball will help me throughout the high school season because I played some very high-level players, and that will continue to strengthen my game.”
Culliton says she has had several coaches and others who have been big influences on her basketball career to date.
“Each and every one of my Phenom coaches have helped me throughout the summer and in the off season to help strengthen my game,” she said. “Some of these include: Coach Zo Williams, Coach Travis Wallace, Coach Nick Bradford, Coach Greg Logsdon and Coach Reggie Middlebrook.
“Also my high school coaches, Coach Hetzel, Coach Harbour, and Coach Novacek have spent a lot of time on and off the court helping me to be a better person and a better basketball player. And my family who supports me through everything.”
A fan of Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams, Culliton says she appreciates his aggressive mentality and work ethic at the defensive end of the court.
“He works well communicating with his guards and is always playing 100 percent,” Cullinton said. “He sets incredible picks all game, and is an unselfish player. I want to emulate his type of type in my game, through setting my guards up for great shots.”
Culliton holds several Division I offers, including Indiana State, Eavnsville, St. Louis, Drake, Missouri State and Wichita State.
“I have had the opportunity to speak with representatives from several college programs, I’ve also made several campus visits where I was able to see the programs first-hand,” she said. “As a high school sophomore I look forward to continuing to interact with a variety of college programs, so that when the time comes I can make the decision that is best for me!”
