But her talent becomes apparent when Marshall starts playing.
“Lydia has, I think, a strong chance of being the player of the year in our league,” Liberty head coach Monty Taylor said. “Her basketball IQ is one of the highest that I’ve had in all the years that I’ve been coaching, both boys and girls. She’s capable of posting up, shooting the three, handling the ball and she doesn’t make many mistakes. She just makes everyone around her better.”
Going into her senior season, this will mark the third year Marshall has been a captain and Taylor said he can depend on her to get practices going and keep the team on track. In games, Marshall can score with either hand. She can, in fact, even shoot 3-pointers with either hand, the result of her continuing to play through a previous shoulder injury by shooting with the other hand.
As a junior last winter, Marshall averaged 13.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.7 steals. The 5-foot-8 guard shot 33 percent (37 for 112) from 3-point range and 84 percent at the free-throw line. Overall, she shot 42 percent from the field.
“She’s one of those kids that’s going to get overlooked and that’s going to be to the detriment of the teams that are overlooking her because I think she’s only going to get stronger,” Taylor said.
A Division-II or NAIA type player, Marshall has been accepted to UCCS, Concordia University, Nebraska, Concordia College and Chadron State, and is looking to play basketball at one of those schools or at another if the right fit came along at the Division-II level. She has a strong academic resume, carrying close to a 4.0 in college prep classes.
