To keep it short and sweet, Valley Vista dominated and looks super tough! In their first two games this season, they have won 81-12 (Liberty) and 67-20 (Red Mountain).
The Monsoon just have too much fire power and great depth from backcourt to front court. Their biggest assets are their overall size and athleticism.
The Monsoon are led by 2021 6’1 F Marisa Davis and 2022 5’11 G/F Jennah Isai. Isai is coming back from an injury and she looks better than ever! The duo is one of the best one two punches in the state and they showed it tonight.
Davis-Jones punched in 18 points and grabbed a ton of boards. MDJ is a freakishly long athlete who has shown a great growth in skill development. She was unstoppable and could seemingly do whatever she pleased on offense. Defensively, she locked down anyone in her path and sent shots flying into the bleachers.
Isai looks like she was never injured and I hope she remains healthy throughout the season and her career. Isai is so fun to watch as she is ultra aggressive in pursuit of getting to the basket. Isai shreds her way into the paint and has excellent finishing ability.
Playing a big role tonight for the Monsoon was 2023 Olivia Arvallo. Arvallo came in the game and looked like a seasoned vet. Arvallo also provided a huge spark off the bench, knocking down 4-4 3 point attempts. Despite her small stature, Arvallo proved she can hang with the big girls!
VV’s press ultimate disrupted anything Red Mountain tried to do. They often struggled to get the ball across half court and honestly don’t think they ever ran an offensive set. Valley was extremely disruptive and caused a lot of chaos.
Red Mountain’s best player and best scorer, Cassidy Duncan was unfortunately ineffective. Due to the lack of ball handling on the team, Duncan had to become the team’s primary ball handler, which isn’t her game. Duncan is a scorer and one of the best shooters. Due to the fact that she was the only one who could handle their press break, she didn’t get many scoring opportunities. In fact, she didn’t get a single shot attempt off due to Valley’s tough defense.
It was a rough night all around for Red Mountain but I’m sure they will bounce back. I know for sure that you will not see another scoreless night from Cassidy Duncan, that’s for sure!
