Rogers dominated in the first half and went into the break with a good lead. But in came the first 10 minutes of the second half it was all Cardinals. Coon Rapids was able to get the lead for a short time 42-38. Rogers would rally then quickly rally back and win 59-47. See our good sized list of standouts from last night’s game at Rogers High School.
Jenny Ntambwe, Forward, Coon Rapids (2021)
Ntambwe was a front court force off the bench in the first half for Coon Rapids. Shooting a perfect 3-3 on the night and collecting some hard rebounds for the Cardinals, Ntambwe’s play in the minutes she was given was a nice surprise which puts her on her standouts list from last night.
Ali Karels Ali Karels 5'5" | CG Rogers | 2020 State MN , Guard, Rogers (2020)
Karels, a Rogers captain had a nice campaign last night for the Royals. At only 5’6 she owned her size and then some while grabbing 6 boards for the Royals. Karels hit two key 3 pointers to help Rogers get a hard fought win over Coon Rapids.
Nicole Post Nicole Post 6'3" | C Coon Rapids | 2021 State MN , Post, Coon Rapids (2021, 113th in our Class of 2021 Power Rankings)
Post lived up to her last name as she was one of the top rebounders last night and scored in double digits for the Cardinals. She also added to the fun at the free throw line as Coon Rapids was 12-22 on the night in which Post was a perfect 100%. Post was a key player in that Coon Rapids come back to start the 2nd half which got them their only lead of the night against the Royals.
Alaina Brenning Alaina Brenning 5'9" | PG Rogers | 2020 State MN , Guard, Rogers (2020)
Another form of senior and captain leadership came from Brenning in the 2nd half last night. After the Cardinals got a small lead on the Royals, it was Benning that turned on the jets to spark the Royals back to a positive outcome in the end. She was especially helpful with her four 3 pointers which came in clutch in the 2nd half to beat Coon Rapids.
Top Player for the Cardinals: Ella Giorgi Ella Giorgi 6'2" | PF Coon Rapids | 2021 State MN , Forward, Coon Rapids (2021, 67th in our Class of 2021 Power Rankings)
Giorgi was the leader of the Cardinals yesterday. She shot the ball well, shot well at the line and was the number one threat for the Cardinals offense in the post. 12 points and 8 rebounds on just under 50% shooting on 9 attempts was the best player I saw for the 0-3 Coon Rapids Cardinals. Well done Ella!
Game MVP: Ellie Buzzelle Ellie Buzzelle 5'9" | SG Rogers | 2022 State #60 Nation MN , Guard, Rogers (2022, 6th in our Class of 2022 Power Rankings)
Dropping 18 points in the first half is what made Buzzelle get my game MVP in this one. Buzzelle runs the floor extremely well and has such a poised left handed jump shot that’s capable of hitting from anywhere on the floor. I thought Buzzelle was due for even more points in the 2nd half, as she was wide open on numerous occasions across the court. Hats off to Ellie Buzzelle Ellie Buzzelle 5'9" | SG Rogers | 2022 State #60 Nation MN and her 21 point game to beat Coon Rapids. She’s definitely “the fire” of this Minnesota Class of 2022.
Coon Rapids (0-3) will head home to take on Duluth East (0-3) who features Ava White Ava White 5'11" | C Duluth East | 2021 MN a post player in our 2021 rankings.
Rogers (1-3) will play Maple Grove (4-2) on Friday who is getting just about 17 points per game from NDSU commit Abby Schulte Abby Schulte 5'10" | PG Maple Grove | 2020 State MN .
