Simon Kenton lit up the scoreboard in the first half for 51 points, and although the Lady Cardinals clamped down defensively in the second half they did not quite have the offensive firepower to make a comeback. There were standout players on each side, so here are some awards for the best individual performances.
Low-Post Presence: Morgan Stamper, Simon Kenton- While Simon Kenton generated much of their offense with strong outside shooting, they may not have gotten as many open shots without the physical inside play of Stamper. The senior forward was obviously comfortable down low, scoring herself as well as passing the ball out to generate open shots for her teammates. She ended up with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists, as well as 4 steals, showing that her low-post play was excellent on both ends.
Best at Drawing Contact: Tyra Flowers, George Rogers Clark- In a game where they struggled to get into a rhythm offensively, the Lady Cardinals were at their best when they were able to get inside and draw contact. Nobody was better at this than Flowers, who spent much of her night at the line. The sophomore forward earned 5 of her 11 points at the line before fouling out due to her overall physical play. Had she not gotten into foul trouble Flowers may have been able to create even more problems for the Lady Pioneers.
Stat-Sheet Stuffer: Brianna Bryars, George Rogers Clark- Bryars did a little bit of everything to try to keep the Lady Cardinals in the game. She played well in all phases and ended up with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. Even as a freshman she looked poised throughout, making more plays than anyone else on her team and ending up with a stat sheet to reflect that.
Best Hustle: Chelsea Little, Simon Kenton- Little was all over the place, disrupting passing lanes, grabbing boards, and diving on the floor for loose balls. The senior also displayed a nice stroke, knocking down some jump shots and all of her free throw opportunities. She ended up with 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block and steal, but those stats don’t truly capture the impact she had on the game.
MVP: Maggie Jones, Simon Kenton- While Simon Kenton as a team was strong offensively, nobody lit up the scoreboard like Jones. The senior guard made her first five threes before finally missing one in the fourth quarter, and ended up with 21 points overall on very efficient shooting. Aside from her scoring contributions, Jones also controlled the pace of the game and made good passes throughout, setting up much of the offense for her teammates. There is no doubt that she was the standout of the evening and the biggest piece of the Lady Pioneers’ win.
