These are the top five performers from the guard position.
Leah Turner | 5’6 | G | Griffin | 2023
As the only freshman to make this list, I was very impressed with the play of Turner. She had the toughest matchup of the night and really showed the confidence on the floor that you don’t see from young guards. She already has good ball-handling and dribble moves to get past defenders and to the rim. She can also shoot the three-point shot. She is sure to continue to improve and will be a player to follow. She finished with 11 points and 3 rebounds.
Raven ThompsonRaven Thompson | 5’7 | G | Langston Hughes | 2022
At first glance, you would not expect Thompson to have as much skill as she displayed in her game. She is a bigger guard that showed an ability to lead the break and make good choices on whether to push it to the rim herself or make a good pass to a teammate in easy scoring range. She showed a very good core balance converting several euro step layups. She is a vocal leader with a lot of court savvy for a sophomore. She is going to be one to watch. She finished with 9 points, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds.
Morgan Harper, courtesy of Hoop-Nation.Morgan Harper | 5’4 | G | St. Francis | 2021
This junior guard knows exactly what her role is on the Lady Knights state championship team. She is the shooter and she shoots it well. She has a quick release with good accuracy beyond the arc. She is a catch and shoot guard that does a good job of finding the weak spots of the defense in the half-court. In transition situations, she is running to the corners looking to get a look. She has good athleticism which helps her defend well on the ball. She finished with 11 points (3 3FG) and 3 steals.
Se’Dazia Harris | 5’7 | G | Bannaker | 2021
A spot-up shooter. Harris showed off her stroke, making three three-point field goals in the game. She is dangerous if left open beyond the arc. She does a great job of running to the corners to stretch the defense in transition which opened up some driving lanes for her teammates. She finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds.
Cash Long brings the ball up after grabbing a reboundCash Long | 5’7 | G | Jonesboro | 2020
Long is a senior guard with a big frame. She moves well with her size and does a good job of muscling defenders at times. She is great penetrating the lane from the perimeter using a combination of strength and ball-handling to get to the rim. She converted several tough layups. She is also a coast to coast threat with the ability to weave through the defense in transition. When she decides to get to the basket only a foul was able to stop her. She finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.
