In the first half, she could not get her shot to fall from 3, and Southwestern struggled as a result. When she started knocking down shots from deep in the 2nd half, it changed the tide of the game and was a major factor in giving her team the win. The senior was aggressive throughout, clearly the Warriors’ biggest offensive presence.
Kenady Tompkins, Scott County- Her usual dominant self in the interior, Tompkins was quite the presence inside. She pulled down rebound after rebound and made it nearly impossible for Southwestern to score at the rim. The junior also showed a good touch on the offensive end, although she was unable to convert on many shots as well. She was able to draw a number of fouls, making her a valuable presence on the offensive end.
Malea Williams, Scott County- It seemed like Williams pulled down all the rebounds Tompkins didn’t manage to grab for the Cardinals, particularly on the offensive end. Along with her rebounding, the senior forward also showed good touch from midrange and played strong defense, blocking several shots. Along with her statistical contributions, Williams’ length and athleticism clearly stood out all night.
Reggi Cundiff, Southwestern- When Southwestern’s shots were not falling in the first half, it was their strong defense that generated turnovers to keep them in the game. Cundiff generated many of these turnovers, getting in passing lanes and deflecting balls to generated transition opportunities for the Warriors. On offense she did a good job getting penetration, making shots and drawing fouls as a result.
Marissa Loveless, Southwestern- Another contributor to the Warriors’ defensive playmaking, Loveless played her role in the post. She did a great job of denying Tompkins the ball, stealing it several times in the process. When Tompkins did have the ball, she played strong D, preventing the Scott County forward from taking over on offense. Her defensive efforts kept Southwestern in the game until their shots started falling.
Morgan DeFoor, Scott County- DeFoor was by far the Cardinals’ best perimeter option on offense. She knocked down several 3’s with a great-looking stroke. She also showed strong ball-handling and some impressive moves to get inside and get herself some layups. Combined with her hustle on defense, constantly pressing and making things more difficult for Southwestern, DeFoor may have been Scott County’s most well-rounded player.
