Leyla Boutte stepped in nicely for Anaiah Wade and made her presence felt. Alexis Howard also came in and hit some big shots. After processing much of what I saw from both teams, I came away with a few thoughts about both squads
Takeaways
Emari SidneyPanthers Emari Sidney MVP
The talented junior does so many things, she rebounds on both ends, can attack the basket from various angles and score mid to long-range. The thing I really like about her game is that she plays within herself and gets hers in the flow
Amber Williams
Firepower from the Panthers backcourt
Amber Williams has been putting up numbers all season, just had a 30 plus a few games ago but her growth since I caught her in the 7th grade, not to mention her poise definitely stands out alongside her range is giving her a breakout junior season. Senior Sydney Rollins can score outside or off the dribble but she also understands the game starts at the one and she does a good job distributing the ball
Sian PhillipsPanthers inside game
Sian Phillips played one of the best games I’ve seen her play, on both ends, as she simply controlled the paint and was somewhat overpowering with a nice drop step as well as putbacks but her rebounding, running the floor and defense have all taken jumps. Another bright spot was freshman Aiyana Johnson who came in and did a good job of using her body on the inside
Elkins Big Three
Tatiana GaterAnika Damera was named MVP as she attacked the basket strongly but the same can be said Tatiana Gater as both found ways to go hard from various angles. Damera is one of four seniors on the squad but the bulk of their scoring will be back. Gater and a very athletic Ndidi Ilochonwu are juniors that will provide a lot for the Knights next season
Tatiana Gater
Knights youth
Mikayla Tarver and Aliyah Payne are only freshmen while Daisha Siler, Joneisha Terry, Rachel Sweeny, and Va Jay Finley are sophomores and all are getting valuable varsity experience that hopefully will help down the road. I’m not going to use that old saying of “the great things about freshmen is that they become sophomores” because it makes no sense. The more you do something, no matter what age at this level, you should get better and they will
