As we enter the 2019/2020 high school basketball season in Kansas. Prep Hoops will preview some of the Kansas City Area high schools. These preview articles will give you details on key players, season expectations and more.
In this article, we preview the defending Class 4A State Champion, Bishop Miege Lady Stags. Coached by Terry English, Miege looks to continue it’s reign of dominance in 2019-20.
Player to Watch
Payton Verhulst, Guard, Junior, (2021), PHG #1 Ranked Player in Kansas
Payton, a 6’1 high IQ, high skill level athlete with limitless abilities. Verhulst has great court awareness and handles well enough to create for teammates as well as herself. With her capability to shoot from mid-range and long-distance, along with her length at the guard position she continues to be a constant match up nightmare for opposing coaches. Look for her to help the Lady Stags continue their reign of highly competitiveness in class 4A.
Ashton Verhulst, Forward, Senior, (2020)
The 6’2, University of Central Florida signee, is a returning starter and key contributor from last years state championship team. A very long and fundamentally sound player, who can play both inside and out. Has proved herself to be a consistent deep threat from beyond the arc as well as from mid range. A good defender that utilizes her length to alter shoots and get deflections.
Emajin McCallop, Guard, Sophomore, (2022)
A 5’7 guard, and returner from last years group is coming off of busy summer with Next Level Eclipse . Athletic and has good handles. Able to finish around the basket through contact as well as knock down the open shoot. Good vision and good decision maker which allows her to to create for her teammates.
Gabi Henderson-Artis, Forward, Sophomore, (2022)
The athletic sophomore is back for a her sophomore season. She played a valuable role as a freshman last year with her ability to shoot the ball from long range, as well as put it on the floor. Has good speed and length at the wing position, which allows her advantages on both sides of the ball.
With the Lady Stags core group of returners, as well as other members back from last years team. Look for them to continue to be a very competitive group in 2019-20.
