In this article, we preview the Lawrence Lady Lions who are led by sixth-year Head Coach Jeff Dickson. Coach Dickson and his squad are coming off an overall record of 12-10 and 6-6 record in the Sunflower League last season. The Lady Lions suffered some major losses due to 4 out of the 5 starters graduating. Most of last season Coach Dickson’s starting lineup consisted of Seniors which is a luxury to have that kind of experience leading your team. Do not count the Lawrence Lady Lions out because they are young on paper. The Lady Lions program is looking to improve on last year’s record this season.
The Lady Lions have a lot of pride and their expectations for every season is to be one of the top teams in the Sunflower League and in the State of Kansas. Coach Dickson and his Lady Lions will be tested early this season with their young lineup that will be on display. Let’s take a look at some key players for the Lady Lions this season that will be contributing to the Lawrence High Lady Lions as they look to take the necessary steps to get on that road to State.
Lady Lions Seniors: These four Lady Lions will need to be leaders and big contributors for Lawrence High this season in order for them to get that elusive road to State.
Ella Stewart, 5’9″ Wing is earning some interest from some colleges, look for her to be a major contributor this upcoming season.
Paiden Bell, 5’9″ Wing who has also earned some interest from some colleges, will also be a major contributor this season.
Sophie DeWitt, 5’3″ Guard who has some Varsity experience will help anchor her team on the defensive end of the floor for the Lady Lions.
Lexi Dutcher, 5’3″ Guard will contribute on the defensive end of the floor at the guard position where it looks like Lawrence will be loaded at the guard position with talent.
Lady Lions Key Contributors, Youngsters and Freshmen to Watch:
Ozi Ajekwu, 6’2″ Forward, Class of 2021 #63 in the Kansas Prep Girls Hoops Rankings could be one of the best forwards in the state. Ozi Sunflower League Honorable Mention last season, look for her to boost her stock and climb up in the rankings this season.
Kayla Galbreath, 6′ Center/Forward, Class of 2021 will be earning some solid minutes for the Lady Lions this season. Kayla has some nice size and she uses it to control the boards on both ends of the floor.
Layla Harjo, 5’5″ Guard, Class of 2022 has a little bit of Varsity experience, she will be a big contributor this season at the guard position. Layla is a shooter, if she gets going early it could be a long night for opposing defenses trying to stop her. Look for Layla to bust into the Kansas Prep Girls Hoops Rankings and earn some interest from some colleges this season.
Amaya Marshall, 5’6″ SG, Class of 2023 #13 in the Kansas Prep Girls Hoops Rankings will come right in and fit into the Lawrence Lady Lions style of play. Amaya has a high basketball IQ, she’s scrappy on defense and if her team needs her to run the point she can slide over and do so. Amaya Marshall has a well-rounded game, look for to help lead her team this season.
Serenity Keo, 5’4″ Guard, Class of 2023 will be earning some quality minutes this season and looking to make her way onto the Kansas Prep Girls Hoops Rankings. Serenity is another 2023 that has some high basketball IQ and she’ll use that to her advantage by playing her role.
Hailey Ramirez, 5’5″ Guard, Class of 2023 will also be earning some quality minutes this season and looking to make her way onto the Kansas Prep Girls Hoops Rankings. Hailey’s high basketball IQ is right there with her Freshman teammates who will be getting quality Varsity minutes.
It will be an interesting season for the Lady Lions and Coach Jeff Dickson as they figure out their roles as they hunt for that elusive road to the Girls 6A Kansas State Championships.
