The 2019-2020 Girls High School Basketball season is upon us. After watching many of these young ladies play on the spring/summer travel circuits, in summer leagues and fall leagues, it’s time to see who really brings it this high school season, in the 757. With that in mind, it’s time to unveil my preseason top-10 rankings.
1. Princess Anne (VA Beach)
Led by the most talented backcourt in the state, 2020 Temple signee, Jasha Clinton and ESPN Hoopgurlz #30, Aziaha James. The reigning Class 5 state champion looks to have the talent, to win a 7th consecutive VA State Championship. Senior returners Kendra Johnson and Tiyanna James are joined by McKenna Harris, transfer Michelle Ojo and highly rated freshman Zakiya Stephenson
2. Lake Taylor (Norfolk)
The Lady Titans seem poised for a fifth straight VA State Title in 2020. Led by Senior Jordon Poole, and returning from injury, 2021 ESPN Hoopgurlz #55, Ja’Naiya Quinerly. Expect a breakout season from Junior. Ashanti Barnes, guards Desire Short and De’Aisjah Somerville are very capable scorers
3. Norview (Norfolk)
The talented Lady Pilots are hoping for a deep run into the state tournament. Leading the way is 2020 UNC-Wilmington signee, Janiya Guilloux, she’s joined by highly touted Mikaya Tynes, LeAsia Foreman, Morgan Williams, and freshman Diamond Wiggins.
4. Menchville (Newport News)
Menchville will be anchored by the backcourt of senior Kelsey Fogarty and junior Tamia Santos, 2020 St Peter’s Univ. signee, Giah Moore will hold down the middle, expect solid contributions by a trio of talented freshman, Keylee Harrison, Amari Smith, and Kiara Beal
5. Hampton
2020 Gardner Webb signee Ciera Bell and 2021 Brown commit Danielle Mcteer join sophomore Player of The Year Jayla Hearp, in what is expected to be a solid season for the Crabbers. Transfer Alonna Sellers and senior returner Kandis Johnson, will be major contributors
6. Kempsville (VA Beach)
Chiefs are led by sophomore Cate Carlson, Mali McCoy, Anayah Lambert, and Tahje Perkins
7. King’s Fork (Suffolk)
The Bulldogs’s title hopes are spring boarded by transfer 18 ppg scorer Yasmine Brown, she joins returners Quadaia Coles, Ashawnti Williams
8. Salem (VA Beach)
The Sun Devil’s will be led by Quiana Vazquez, Tinesha Gregory, Amaris Felton and Riley Sherridan
9. Bethel (Hampton)
The bruins are excited for the return of guard Ayanna Chambers along with a solid supporting cast
10. Western Branch (Chesapeake)
2020 NC A&T signee Crystal White leads the Bruins along with the athletic Cayla Copeland and forward Eryn Byrd
