Most of the games I witnessed were competitive, which led to great performances from some of the top players. I am always amazed by the skill set of some of the players I watch. This tournament was no different. I was able to identify seven players that stood out and could have bright futures!
Navaeh Caldwell
Caldwell is a 5’8” junior guard from Hopewell High School in Charlotte, NC. What I love about Caldwell is her intensity. She does not back down from a challenge. She took the challenge of guarding at different points of the game, 3 outstanding guards from the opposing team. She did a great job of staying competitive and making things difficult for her opponent. Caldwell has long arms, which helps her contain guards on defense. On offense, she understands when to take over and when to make sure her team members need to get involved. She has a nice handle and can get to the basket. I was impressed with her shot as well. When she gets on a roll she is tough to stop. Caldwell is the heart and soul of the team. When Caldwell is making smart decisions, she can elevate her team to another level.
Laimani Simmons
Simmons is a 5’9 senior guard from Legacy Early College in Greenville, SC, who will attend High Point University next year. She is a player! She is what I call a gamer. That means she is up for any challenge and willing to get it done by any means. She is long and possesses good athleticism. Simmons can get to the basket and has a solid jumper. She is the type to step her game up when needed. She is a tremendous slasher and very hard to deal with once she gets going. She is a seasoned player and very solid!
Nia Howard
Nia Howard is a 5’8” junior from Jordan High School in Durham, NC. She can shoot the ball! She is capable of knocking down threes and has a nice shooting stroke. If you leave her open, she will take the shot and make you pay! I would like to see her improve on her dribbling. If she can create more offense off the dribble she can become a high-level offensive player.
Randria Anderson
Anderson is a 5’11” guard from Legacy Early College in Greenville, SC. Let’s be clear, I like Anderson. She can handle the ball will poise and has some fight in her as a competitor. She is like a quiet assassin. She can score going to the basket and she can hit the jump shot. She is comfortable passing the ball and has no issues with being the extension of the coach. She has long arms and has good speed. She dribbles the ball with speed along with poise. This combination gives her a chance to make good decisions with the ball in the middle of intense up-tempo play. She is returning from suffering two ACL tears so that alone is inspiring and displays heart. Anderson will be attending Campbell University next year!
Senali Moss is a 5’7” sophomore guard from South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC. Moss is a guard that will sneak up on you if you aren’t careful. She may not be the fastest or tallest but Moss gets the job done. She can pretty much do everything. She can dribble well enough to handle pressure and score. She can pass to the open teammate and defends very well. She is growing into a leader also. She can shoot well and again, she is just a sophomore. She is going to improve in all those areas and get better. She is so well-rounded in all areas that when the game is over she has quietly dominated the game. You check the scorebook and she has 21 points 5 boards 4 assists. I can’t wait to see her grow and learn just how great she can become. Moss is the type of player that you do not shut down because she does things you can’t defend. Players like that find ways to compete with you and beat you. As an opponent, you have a hard time figuring out how and why they defeated you.
Aysia Hinton
Aysia Hinton is a 5’9” sophomore guard from Jordan High School in Durham, NC. She is young but she has the potential to be very good. She has a nice jump shot and she seems to have a good feel for the game. She is not afraid of stepping up and playing her game when needed. She is coordinated and mature for her class. She can battle with the competition and is very confident in her game. She will be one to watch over the next 2 years as she grows and improves.
Aniya Finger is a 6’0” senior forward from Hopewell High School in Charlotte NC. She will be attending Arkansas St. next season. Finger, is very good around the basket. She has good hands and has decent feet. When she squares up around the free-throw line and declares which way she is going, she is tough to stop. In this tournament, I was able to witness her hit a few threes. If she can continue to add that element to her game, she will be very hard to stop. She is the type of player that shouldn’t go many possessions without the ball. Finger has to get touches, not because she will get frustrated but because it will help her team win! From my evaluation, good things happen when Finger touches the ball.
