A few teams surprised, including Omaha Northwest going 2-0 to start out the season. In our lower classes, Omaha Mercy starts out 2-0 for the first time in recent memory, along with Bennington and Platteview also off to a nice start. Again, you don’t want to say too much about the opening weekend, but these teams got off to a nice start for the 2019-20 season.
THREE THINGS I LIKE:
- Boy, can Millard South score the basketball! It is obviously early, but anyone that tops 100 points in a regulation game and is averaging 94 points a game is quite impressive. As the competition level picks up for the Patriots, that number is sure to become smaller, but our preseason pick to win Class A is off to a great start.
- Equally as impressive is Lincoln Pius X, with two impressive victories over Omaha Marian and Lincoln Southwest. After losing an excruciating semi-final last season to Millard North, Pius looks like they might be the second best team in Class A.
- Chadron makes a nice run in the Western Trails Tournament, defeating Class B contender Scottsbluff and then Class A North Platte in the championship game. A nice start for one of the traditional powers of Nebraska’s Panhandle region.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: As stated before, Lincoln Pius X opened with two impressive wins, and they were lead by their catalyst, 6’3″ South Dakota State commit Alexis Markowski, Markowski had 15 points in their opening victory against Omaha Marian (a game where the Thunderbolts lead 52-14 at one point), then followed that up with 33 points in a convincing victory over Lincoln Southwest. Markowski and the Thunderbolts have hit the ground running to start the new campaign.
GAME OF THE WEEK –> LINCOLN-OMAHA CORRIDOR: In Class A, the best, most intriguing match-up of the week is this coming Saturday when Lincoln East travels to Omaha to visit the surprising 2-0 Omaha Northwest Huskies. Lincoln East, which returns all five starters from their state sem-final team last year, will be looking to get a nice wild-card points victory early in the season, while Omaha Northwest will be looking for an early signature victory to show that they are here to stay in the ranks of the Class A elite.
GAME OF THE WEEK –> STATE-WIDE: Perhaps the best game of the week will take place in Nebraska City, where 2-0 Nebraska City Lourdes will take on one of the top ranked clubs in Class D2, Falls City Sacred Heart. Both teams figure to be heavily involved in what happens in their class during late February and early March, so this will be a good measuring stick for both squads and allow both of them to see where they stand.
