Top Scorers from Monday and Tuesday
With teams opening the 2019-20 season on Monday and Tuesday night, the PGH Colorado crew hit a couple of games around Colorado. Then we hit MaxPreps.com today to see who kicked off the new campaign by putting up some some big numbers in the scoring column.
Here are the top scorers from the first couple nights of hoops around the state.

Grace Talbot Grace Talbot 5'6" | PG Chatfield | 2022 State CO opened her sophomore season with a bang, dropping 25 points in a 55-44 win over Boulder. Along with Cherokee Trail’s Dominique Rodriguez Dominique Rodriguez 5'6" | PG Cherokee Trail | 2020 State CO also putting up 25 points, this was the highest scoring number we’ve seen reported thus far. Talbot, who entered the season with high expectations after scoring 13.1 points a night as a freshman, was 8 for 18 from the field and shot 63 percent (5 for 8) from behind the 3-point arc. That definitely counts as starting the season on a high note.
Katelynn Ralston – Cheyenne Mountain
Ralston put up 22 big points for the Indians in a 70-59 win over Widefield on Tuesday. The 5-foot-9 senior forward shot 50 percent (7 for 14) from the field and also pulled down eight rebounds in the win. Ralston getting off to a hot start is a good sign for an Indians club looking to improve on a 7-16 season in 2018-19. Freshman shooting guard Alena San Augustin Alena San Augustin 5'5" | PG Cheyenne Mountain | 2023 State CO nearly matching Ralston with 22 points of her own while shooting 67 percent from the field and going 3 for 4 from 3-point range should give Cheyenne Mountain even more reason for optimism.

A 24-point scoring outburst should come as no surprise from the reigning 3A Player of the Year, and Josephine Howery Josephine Howery 5'9" | PG St. Mary's | 2020 State CO wasted no time reminding everyone that she and the Pirates are back for their third straight state title with a 75-22 win over Resurrection Christian. Howery made nine of 16 shot attempts and the Pirates had four players – Howery, Seneca Hackley Seneca Hackley 5'9" | SG St. Mary's | 2020 State CO (17), Ellie Hartman Ellie Hartman 5'6" | CG St. Mary's | 2022 State CO (13) and Brooklyn Valdez (12) – score in double figures.
Emily Sanchez Emily Sanchez 5'0" | SG Sheridan | 2022 State CO – Sheridan
A third player to kick of the season with 24 points, Sanchez began her sophomore year with the Rams by hitting six 3-pointers and shooting 7 for 16 overall. Sheridan lost 50-44 to Denver North but their sophomore captain scoring over 20 points and coming up with five steals was a bright spot in the defeat.

A freshman scoring 24 points in her first-ever high school game is something to behold, and Brooke Murrell Brooke Murrell 6'2" | PF Thomas Jefferson | 2023 State CO did exactly that in a loss to a strong Sierra club. The 6-foot-1 forward also had 15 rebounds to kick off her high school career with a double-double. She and shot 8 for 17 from the field and was 8 for 16 at the free-throw line.
Emma Rich Emma Rich 5'5" | PG Broomfield | 2021 State CO – Broomfield
Rich never scored more than six points in 31 varsity games prior to Monday night’s 22-point outburst in the eighth-ranked Eagles’ 79-20 win over Northglenn. This is what her final line read: 22 points, five assists, four rebounds and five steals. Rich did her scoring on 7-for-9 shooting and hit four of the five 3-pointers she attempted. That’s quite an auspicious beginning to her junior season.
