Despite New Town’s players being from both JV and Varsity squads, they more than held their own against the larger, older, and more experienced Atholton team.
Jourdyn Ayers (#2): This New Town guard was the overall best player on the court. Her aggression on both ends of the floor set the tone for the younger members of her team. Fouled six times while shooting, Ayers could not be stopped on both the offensive and defensive glass. Clearly also possessing a high basketball IQ, she demonstrated her excellent court vision with her ability to run the fast break and adept passing skills. Finishing with 15 points, Ayers impressed in this scrimmage, and it is clear she will be crucial on this New Town team as the season gears up.
Jalane Campbell (#10): As New Town’s point guard, she is an athletic defender with strong footwork. Finishing with seven points, she will prove to be a strong leader on the court along with Ayers this season.
Madison McCabe (#15): An all-around player for Atholton, McCabe demonstrated her versatility with her inside-outside game. Despite only finishing with four points, she was a tenacious rebounder and demonstrated a confident jump shot.
Tiara Kidd (#25): Atholton’s strongest post presence, Kidd capitalized on her size advantage over the undersized New Town guards, frequently scoring on drop step moves and quick drives to the hoop. Also successfully executing a pick a roll option, she showed her court awareness and leadership skills, finishing with five points.
Mia Hargrett (#27): Though Atholton had a lot to demonstrate in the post, Hargrett proved that the Raiders’ guard-play is not to be overlooked. She is Atholton’s strongest guard, despite finishing with three points, it is clear she has a practiced 3-point shot and quick defensive hands to match.
Erica Morton (#5): Another strong guard for the Raiders, Morton was successful from the floor in this scrimmage. Finishing with eight points, Morton was Atholton’s leading scorer and her confidence with her jump-shot is sure to only improve as the season progresses.
Laila Cowsette (#45): Another key player in this Atholton varsity squad, she was also unafraid to show her dominance in the paint against the smaller New Town team. Also confident with her jump shot, Cowsette expanding her already promising inside-outside game this season will be key for the Raiders’ success.
