- The surprise of the tournament was undoubtedly the Southern Boone Lady Eagles, who came in as the 5 seed. The Lady Eagles defeated Hallsville, Boonville, and California to win the tournament in convincing fashion. The biggest win of the tournament came in the semi-finals against a heavily favored Boonville squad. SoBoCo handled Boonville’s ball press and had some big stops late in the game to pull off the upset. A couple players who are really playing well for the Lady Eagles are Gabbie Bruce and Trinity Schupp. Bruce is a knock down shooter, especially from the corner, and Schupp is a throwback mid-post player who does all of her damage out of the hi-post. Southern Boone is currently 5-0 and looks like one of the better Class 3 teams in the state.
- Following their semi-final lose to Southern Boone, the Boonville Lady Pirates proceeded to absolutely demolish a solid Blair Oaks team in the consolation game 75-29. The win over Blair Oaks looked to be truer to form for the Lady Pirates, who were able to speed up the Lady Falcons, and shot the lights out from three point range. Boonville undoubtedly has the most talent, from top to bottom, in the Tri-County conference, headlined by super sophomore Addie Brownfield, who is currently attracting division one interest. Expect to see Boonville climb into the Class 4 rankings before the end of the year.
- Last but not least is the California Lady Pintos. As usual, Coach Sangster has a tough and talented squad, which is led by standout shooting guard Tristan Porter. California was voted the second seed behind Boonville, which matched them up with a young Eldon team in the opening round. In the semi-final game against Blair Oaks, California’s size proved too much for the Lady Falcons to handle and California slowly pulled away. It is safe to say that California is one of the better Class 3 teams, but they looked out of sorts offensively for most of the week. It will be interesting to see how this California team comes together over the course of the season.
