While both teams are a bit younger than usual, the Trotwood Rams had little trouble cruising past Eastmoor Academy 74-45 in a game held in Trotwood.
But you don’t win games on tradition, you have to produce. That is what Trotwood did, as they jumped out to a big halftime lead and never looked back.
Here are five take-aways from the big Rams victory.
Which team shows up?
Nobody knew which Eastmoor team was going to show up for this weeknight battle in Trotwood. They have been on both ends of the spectrum this season. Earlier in the year, Eastmoor defeated Marion Franklin 84-0 in one of the rare shutouts in Ohio basketball. Another game just three days later, the Warriors suffered a 90-19 loss at the hands of Africentric. On this day, Eastmoor trailed 46-22 at the half and could never recover as Trotwood was too much.
Would Eastmoor be able to contain Redmond?
That answer was given early when Trotwood Madison freshman sensation guard Raeven Raye Redmond (pictured above) buried a three in the opening minute of the game. Redmond is a 5-foot-7 lightning quick, athletic guard who can score at all three levels. She showed that she has excellent range, can get by her defender and score, and loves the transition game. Redmond finished the game with 11 points and 12 steals on the game, and she continues to lead the talent-heavy GWOC in steals through the first few weeks of the season,
Huffman tough to contain
They call her “Q”, but as for Quantaijah Huffman, the junior guard really controlled the game for the Rams. The 5-foot-8 multi-talented guiard really set the tempo for the game. She is very athletic and has great body control, able to penetrate through the defense and makes it look easy. Great burst of speed north-south, explodes to the rim, can hang and score. Also showed a lot of perimeter range knocking down four three’s in the win. Excellent defender who can also find the better shot with her passing ability.
Most Improved Player
A player who I was really impressed with from last year was Trotwood’s 5-11 senior Goddess McIntyre, a strong power forward who had a great offensive game against Eastmoor. She was unstoppable on the boards, physically controlling the inside game and showed some short range with a couple of midrange jumpers. She is an unsigned senior who has really improved her game.
One to Watch
I saw some glimpses of solid play from Eastmoor junior Tia Wilson, who provided a lot of the offense that the Warriors had in the first half. She created a lot on her own, got to the rim and scored on a few occasions, and knocked down some free throws. This Columbus City League program is traditionally strong but are trying to get things going this year under a first year head coach.
