#1 – Caitlin Clark – 5’11 PG – Dowling Catholic
Clark remains the top player in the state and as someone who is universally regarded as one of the top five players in the nation, she’ll hold that spot through the end of her career. Clark has elevated her game this year becoming more consistent with her scoring ability and getting others involved even more. Clark recently committed to Iowa and was the last person in the top-22 to announce her college choice.
#2 – Shateah Wetering – 5’11 SF – Montezuma
Wetering moves up the list to #2 mainly due to her versatility. She showed her versatility this summer as she was able to score at all three levels and I think she is among the best in the state at scoring at the rim. Wetering can play positions 1-4 on the floor at times and handles the ball like a point forward. It will be interesting to see how Iowa utilizes her and her skillset.
#3 – Sharon Goodman – 6’3 C – Crestwood
Goodman is one of the most efficient post players in the entire country and she will be headed to Iowa next year much like the two players above her. She is almost automatic once she gets the ball on the inside in the post and does that as teams fly to her with double and triple teams. Goodman hasn’t been stopped yet and should flourish even more at Iowa.
#4 – Aubrey Joens – 5’9 SG – Iowa City High
Joens dropped two spots in the rankings but that isn’t indicative of her play, I just think the other two players have a bit higher of a ceiling. Joens is one of the best shooters in the state and is shooting the ball at a 50 percent rate this season. I am a little apprehensive about her ability to get to the line and attack the rim though, as she has shot just 16 free throws on the season. For her to move back up I want to see her show aggression in attacking.
#5 – Maya McDermott – 5’5 PG – Johnston
McDermott moved up two spots in the rankings and now she sits at fifth overall. She’s gotten better over the last year and she’s one of the best passer and quickest guards in the state. McDermott has an edge that a lot of players don’t have and she is always going to fight for her team. Her performance this year cannot be understated. She’s heading to Northern Iowa next year and I think she’ll compete for the Freshman of the Year award right away.
#6 – Emerson Green – 5’10 SG – Cedar Falls
Green is one of the best scorers in the state but drops a spot due to the emergence of McDermott this season. Green is heading to Northern Iowa as well next year. She is a lengthy scoring guard who has a great mid-range jumper and the ability to create for herself. I like the aggression that she plays with and she’s going to be a dynamic combo guard in her years at Northern Iowa.
#7 – Kayba Laube – 5’9 SG – Marion
Laube is the best shooter in the state but she moves down one spot in the rankings. Laube is a very solid defender and can play both guard spots on the floor. She will likely be utilized as a shooting guard at the next level, however. She’s a very tough player with a high IQ on display every time she takes the floor. Look for her to continue scorching the nets this season and then for four years in college.
#8 – Rose Nkumu – 5’8 PG – Iowa City High
Nkumu is finishing at the rim really well this season and has proven to be a complete leader on the floor. She is a very solid passer and has the ability to take hold of an offense on the floor. She shot the ball really well at times this summer but so far this season hasn’t shot it as well. Nkumu would make a push for the top five if she can showcase an improved ability to shoot the ball the rest of the season.
#9 – Nyamer Diew – 6’1 SF – Sioux City East
Diew moves up seven spots into the top ten as she had a great summer and has consistently played at a high level this winter. Diew is a 6’1 wing who is one of the lengthiest players in the entire state. She’s not even close to her ceiling as far as development goes and that will only benefit her in the long run. She is at #9 because she still has a ton of room to elevate her skill. Diew is committed to Butler.
#10 – Grace Boffeli – 6’1 PF – North Scott
Boffeli has really taken off in the past nine months. What started as a dominant run in the state tournament last year has catapulted her into the top ten in the class. She’s a tough, hard-nosed player on the inside and she has dominated every step of the way this year. She’s still got a lot of room for growth as she gets stronger and once she realizes her potential could be one of the best posts in the Missouri Valley.
