Both coaches had their teams well prepared and ready to execute. AK didn’t have their top performer Evan Miller, as she was under the weather. Even so, AK jumped out to an early lead by running offensive sets and executing. As the game progressed, Olympic picked up the pressure on defense which increased the pace. In the end, some young talent stepped up and led Olympic to a victory 38-35! Here are 4 players to watch going forward from the game.
Aniya Scales
Scales is freshmen guard for Olympic. What I like about Scales is her heart. She doesn’t appear intimidated or scared to face upperclassmen. As stated earlier, AK jumped out to an early lead and controlled the game. Scales was a big reason Olympic carved their way to victory. A major skill she displays is slashing to the rim. She is able to slice through cracks in the midst of a crowd and find the backboard. She hustles on defense and makes things difficult for the opposing team. She needs to work on her jumper and from what I gather that will be a big emphasis this summer. She handles the ball well and looks like a leader. Look for great things from Aniya! Keep an eye on her!
Grace Belcher
Belcher is a junior guard for Ardrey Kell. She is sneaky good. Evan Miller gets most of the credit on that team but Belcher contributes a great deal. She has a nice jump shot and if you leave her open she will hit it! She has good enough handles to find her sweet spots. She doesn’t force anything and she plays within her means. Next year she will have the opportunity to prove herself as the go-to person and I’m excited to see how she develops in that role. I really believe once she gets the opportunity to step up, she will be fun to watch.
Jada Brigman
Brigman is a sophomore guard from Olympic who can play on the perimeter and down low. I was really impressed with her low post presence. She is a force down low. She rebounds and grinds down in the paint. She wants the ball down there and you can tell she is a difference maker. She has a “will to win” mentality. She will do whatever it takes to compete and her teammates seem to follow. There is no doubt in my mind that her game will develop and by next year she will be hard to stop. I wasn’t able to witness her perimeter game as she’s listed as a guard but I will watch her again later this year.
Lucy Vanderbeck
Vanderbeck is a junior forward for Ardrey Kell. Vanderbeck is tough! She understands the game and does a great job picking her spots to produce. She has a nice jump shot. She is not the fastest or quickest but she understands the game. She is not going to force anything, she stays in her lane and she contributes. She is what I call a glue piece. She is very dependable and somebody her teammates can count on to execute the game plan. Keep an eye on Vanderbeck as she develops more over the summer. I’m excited to see how she improves and performs as a senior.
