An adjustment had to be made with the final game between Douglass and Wesleyan being canceled. I was looking forward to seeing that match but was more than impressed with the matchups still slatted.
Here are the top prospect performances at the event ranging all four classes. There were some big bright spots including freshman Taniya McGowan of Archer.
Watts, a Navy commit.Sydne Watts | 6’1 | F | Cherokee | 2020 | #34
I really liked everything about Watts’ style of play. The Navy commit and #34 ranked prospect entered the game on a mission to score the 1000th point of her career and seemed determined to make it happen. She showed textbook rim runs for a post player and her teammates found her in transition. She has good speed and uses it for both ends and even chased down a couple of transition layups to send them flying out of bounds. She is an athlete and it shows on her mid-range jump shots with her elevation making it hard for defenders to contest. She is on a campaign her senior year and is likely to rise in our rankings.
Charles is a versatile wing.Janae Charles | 6’0 | W | Loganville | 2021 | #24
Charles is ranked #24 for her class and does it all for her Loganville Lady Red Devils. She moves all around the floor, filling different roles for her team. With her length and athleticism, combined with a great understanding of the game, she can play and defend every position on the floor. She can play the point guard for her team on one possession and head to the block looking to post up on the next. Head Coach John Zorn does a great job using her versatile skill set and allowing her to play with confidence and because of that Charles’ stock is rising. She is already hearing from some DI programs.
McGowan of Archer is a young guard with high potential.Taniya McGowan | 5’11 | W | Archer | 2023
McGowan has been added to our watchlist. I was told by a referee in the stands to keep an eye on her and as soon as we tipped it off, she was putting on a show. She has a complete offensive game and the confidence to go with it. He defenses aren’t focused on stopping her she can score on a string of consecutive possession and from every level. She has dribble moves, crafty finishes, accurate three-point shooting, with size and toughness to go along. I believe she is going to be a big-time player. Remember her name because Coach Dani Wright has a young group that is likely going to make a lot of noise with McGowan leading the attack next season.
Grace is a ASU commit.Malia Grace | 6’2 | C | Grayson | 2020 | #41
The Lady Rams put a balanced team on the court each competition and Grace is a big reason why. She’s the #41 ranked player in 2020 and committed to Alabama State. This was not my first time seeing her but it was the best I’ve seen her play. She was matched against another ranked post from Cherokee and she did more than hold her own. She finished with 20 points making several trips to the foul line making 6 of 7 attempts. She has a very good fell in the painted area and a pretty good offensive scoring package. I believe she will be a good player for Head Coach Freeman-Jackson at ASU.
Brown is a force on the court.Chatham Brown | 5’8 | W | Cherokee | 2020
Chatham Brown was a monster in her game. Because of her strong, physical, and aggressive play, she ended with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. She has a big solid frame and uses it very well. She is also confident as a ball-handler. On several plays, she grabbed rebounds and was able to go coast to coast with 4-5 dribbles from end to end and finish tough layups. She is the type of player whose energy can be infectious for teammates. She a great driver and slasher but is very reluctant at shooting the jump shot. Brown is committed to Shorter where I believe she will have an immediate impact on the program.
Sydney Bolden | 5’10 | G | Loganville | 2022
Bolden has a motor that does not stop. She plays very aggressively on defense and is really becoming a problem to guard on offense. The young guard is a driver and can get to the rim and finish through contact, sometimes at will. She can put together multiple scores on consecutive possessions when she turns it on. She also found herself at the line a couple of times looking to covert the “And-1” free-throw. She showed court awareness on her drives and was able to pick up a few assists by recognizing where the help defense would come from. Look for her on our next set of player rankings for the 2022 class.
Lee is a smaller point guard with a lot of heart.Nyelle Lee | 5’4 | PG | Grayson | 2020
Lee is a very good available point guard that coaches need to take a look at. She has impressed me with her competitive play in each game I’ve seen her. In a very close game against a good Cherokee team, she took over the 4th quarter and almost willed her team to a victory. She is a great on-ball defender and is extremely fast in transition. Her first step in the half-court gets her past any defender and into the lane any time she wants. She has earned a spot in our next set of rankings coming out in the near future.
Ashlee Locke | 6’3 | F | Flowery Branch | 2021 | #11
This was my second opportunity to see Ashlee Locke in game action. The Mercer commit and #11 ranked player in her class looked better offensively than when I first saw her. She showed some good footwork and a desire to be physical in the paint. She also has a very sweet shooting stroke. She runs the floor hard and has good rim protection potential with her size. I believe as her rebounding continues to improve she will be even more effective for her Lady Falcons.
Kulo is a Western Kentucky commit.Selma Kulo | 6’4 | G | Brookwood | 2020 | #29
Selma is a great pickup for Western Kentucky who she signed an NLI for back in 2019. She played hard for her Brookwood squad and was one rebound away from a double-double. Kulo is a skilled post player that relies more on her crafty post moves to score the ball. She has a good understanding of angles and gets the ball to the rim before defenders can make good challenges on her attempts. She is also a high percentage free-throw shooter and went 4 of 4 from the foul line in the game.
