Most of the scoring came in the paint, and much of that scoring came from Brossart’s Marie Kiefer, who was outstanding. Everyone on the Lady ‘Stangs played strong defense and turned in gritty performances to prevail, while the Lady Eagles had some strong performances as well. Here are the players whose performances were the strongest.
Marie Kiefer, Brossart- The clear standout player in this game, Kiefer dominated with her superior size, towering over everyone else on the court. When Brossart was able to get the ball inside to their junior center, she was absolutely unstoppable. Aside from scoring at will on the inside, she also stepped out and knocked down some jump shots, showing range to go along with her inside excellence. All told, Kiefer scored 27 of Brossart’s 51 points to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds, as well as blocking several shots on the defensive end in a phenomenal performance.
Sofia Allen, Scott- Leading the way for the Lady Eagles was their junior forward. Allen did a little bit of everything for Scott, as she was their best scorer, rebounder, and passer. She had a role in almost everything Scott did, and despite her team’s lack of success showed that she is clearly a versatile playmaker.
Rosie Jump, Brossart- Speaking of do-it-all players, Jump filled that role for the Lady ‘Stangs. The junior forward made plays all over the place, playing strong defense, pulling down 8 rebounds, and often leading the charge for Brossart. While she only scored 5 points, she had an impact on the game that went beyond her scoring total.
Malayia Lewis, Scott- In a game where nobody was shooting well from outside, Lewis’s attacking demeanor was valuable for the Lady Eagles. Rather than settling for jump shots, the junior wing kept going to the rim, putting the pressure of Brossart’s defense and creating for Scott. She was able to draw score, make passes, and draw some fouls, giving the Lady Eagles the aggressive attitude they needed.
Lauren Macht, Brossart- As the top scoring threat for the Lady ‘Stangs outside of Kiefer, Macht turned in an important performance. Kiefer’s minutes were limited in the first half due to foul trouble, but Macht’s scoring helped keep Brossart close. The sophomore wing scored in transition and knocked down one of the few jump shots of the game while only attempting a minimal 6 shots, and added 6 rebounds and good defense for good measure.
Payton Fields, Scott- In a game where outside shots were not falling, Fields showed an ability to score at the rim was very valuable. The sophomore guard got inside as well as anyone in the game and converted better than most, an especially impressive feat considering she was one of the smallest players on the court. She also played strong defense with several steals showed a strong handle.
Madison Parker, Brossart- Doing the little things can be valuable as well as making big plays, and that’s what Parker did Thursday night. The sophomore guard handled the ball well throughout, made smart passes, and generally kept things moving for the Lady ‘Stangs. Plus, she knocked down 4 big free throws in the closing minutes to put the game away, showing the ability to keep doing the little things when the pressure is on.
