Both teams defeated the top seeds to get to the finals as Steelville defeated No. 1 seed and six-time defending tourney champion Park Hills Central in the semifinals. Ste. Genevieve defeated No. 2 seed South Iron, which was the top-ranked No. 1 team in the state.
In one of the most exciting games of the season, Ste. Genevieve outlasted Steelville 78-72 in a double-overtime thriller. Ste. Genevieve built a 21-point lead in the first half, only to see Steelville storm back in the second half to force overtime. The lead changed hands numerous times in both of the extra sessions before the undefeated Dragons held on to win their first Park Hills Tournament championship.
Here are seven standout players from the Ste. Genevieve-Steelville championship game.
Ste. Genevieve
Sydney Bumgardaner 5’11” (‘21): The versatile forward was the best all-around player on the court with 21 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks. She scored in the post, handled the ball and facilitated the offense, and knocked down a huge 3-pointer in the second overtime period.
Maci Reynolds 5’4″ (’21): A fearless combo guard who scored a game high 27 points. Despite being the smallest player on the floor, she was tremendous at attacking the basket and scoring in traffic. She was also excellent in the transition game.
Marysa Flieg 5’11” (’22): A solid performer who had eight points and 10 rebounds in the championship game. She also stepped out and made a 3-pointer to go along with her strong performance in the boards.
Megan Aubuchon 5’10” (’21): The junior forward scored 10 points in a solid performance for the winners. She got a few buckets in transition and also on the offensive boards.
Steelville
Naomi Perkins 5’8″ (’22): The young sharpshooter scored a team high 26 points, which included seven 3-pointers. Her perimeter shooting propelled the Cardinals back from a 21-point deficit, including a last second 3-pointer to force overtime.
Sydney Booker 6’0″ (’21): The young post player scored 22 points as she complimented Perkins’ perimeter shooting. She had a variety of moves in the post, including a very nice up and under move. She was also very good at making her free throws.
Alyssa Church 5’7″ (’21): A very impressive point guard who knew how to run her team. She has good handles and she passes the ball well. She could make an open 3-pointer and can score when needed.
