Continue ReadingScoring 1,000 points in a high school career is a benchmark few players reach, and those that do can proudly hold that accomplishment up as a testament to both their scoring ability and longevity as varsity players. Let’s take a look at some of the 1,000-point scorers who are currently playing high school ball in Colorado.
Kaya Evans, 2020, 5-8, G, Vista PEAK
The newest member of Colorado’s 1,000-point club, Evans passed the mark in the Bison’s most recent win over Brighton on Jan. 24. So far as an unsigned senior, Evans is averaging 10.6 points, two assists, 1.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. The four-year varsity guard is also shooting 30 percent from 3-point range and is a big reason her club can boast a 14-1 record.
Emily Cavey
Emily Cavey, 2020, 5-0, W, Berthoud
Cavey passed the 1,000-point plateau as a junior, and did so despite missing most of the 2018-19 season because of an injury. The four-year varsity wing with a deadly combination of length and athleticism scored 359 points as a freshman and 491 points as a sophomore. Back and fully healthy for the first time in a while, Cavey is averaging 17 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 3.2 steals while shooting 26 percent (22 for 86) from 3-point range through the first 16 games of her senior season. Proving her health is about the only thing Cavey had to do in order to solidify her place among Colorado’s top recruits, and it will be interesting to see where she ends up at the next level.
Bryn Durrill, 2021, 5-8, G, Flatirons Academy
Durrill is a multi-sport talent from the Class 1A ranks who also plays volleyball and soccer. Over the course of her career, which has seen her already pass 1,000 points as a junior, she has averaged 17.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.9 assist and 2.9 steals over 59 varsity games. In 2019-20, Durrill is simply continuing what she has done to this point only more efficiently, shooting 48 percent from the field and 35 percent (9 for 26) from 3-point range.
Isabelle “Izzy” Munson
Isabelle Munson, 2020, 5-9, G, Fairview
* Emory University commit
Better known as “Izzy,” Munson is second in the state in scoring, averaging 23.5 points per game as a senior. That torrid pace combined with a solid four-year varsity career with the Knights led her to pass the 1,000-point career scoring mark during a win over Mountain Range on Jan. 17. Munson has scored 20 or more points in over half of the Knights’ games in 2019-20 and is shooting 37 percent (27 for 73) from 3-point range. With Munson tearing it up, the Knights are 10-5 overall and are leading the Front Range League with a 5-0 conference record.
Hannah Simental, 2020, 5-8, G, Pueblo West
* University of Northern Colorado commit
Simental blew past the 1,000-point mark in her junior season, during which she scored an incredible 515 points in 24 games. Set to join the University of Northern Colorado Bears next season, Simental is averaging 16.4 points, 2.3 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.9 steals as a senior, which is even more impressive when considering the fact that every team the Cyclones play has to focus its defensive efforts on her. Simental will look to keep it up and help the Cyclones build momentum towards the postseason as one of the few top favorites for the Class 4A crown.
