A college coach wrote that wins & losses stem from three primary factors: (1) Turnovers; (2) Player taking wrong shot; &, (3) Spacing. Let’s add that fouls are a special subset of turnovers since both result in additional scoring.
PGH watched RCS overwhelm Spearfish 75-32 on Jan 6th. Excellent shooters, and splendid athletes, the Raiders looped lazy passes, fumbled dribbles and made errant exchanges all night long. Two RCS starters were sat in the first quarter with 3 fouls each. Turnover Night – Let’s Party! Stevens had 24 TO’s & racked up 22 fouls. The inept Spartans were clearly intimidated from the tip-off. Backcourt traps bled their hopes away early. After the 1st qtr, RCS led 23-3; the final score was 75-32, thanks to the mercy rule.
RCS’ roster contains 5-to-7 college prospects. A college coach’s checklist would not show A’s, B’s, or C’s for anyone, except Kyah Watson. As the only complete player present, she lofted 5 three’s in her 25-point night. USD signed up a gem.
Streaming video brought the Jan 3rd O’Gorman-Yankton contest to the PGH 70-inch screen. At the 1st qtr, Lady Knights led 16-2; the score final was 59-26. Yankton coughed up 23 turnovers (OG=7). Fouls called were 14 on YHS & 12 on OG. Emma of The House of Ronsiek topped scoring with 15; Izzy Moore hit 14, with stolen passes & Carly Kunkel plunked in 12 from the point, while directing the 2-3 zone defense utilized. The Reilly sisters and Hannah of The House of Ronsiek compete hard, adding BB IQ points to the mix.
Not difficult to predict the Jan 25th outcome, unless RCS reforms its ball security. Empty possessions hand over the keys to victory.
Yankton’s Madison Wuebben and Payton Wolfgram give the Gazelles a one-two punch, both capable of hitting long bombs and driving to a finish. Wolfgram slips herself thru tiny openings to surprise scoring, and zippy assisting. Kelsey Oswald and Saddie Fedders bring skills to help master the tough schedule remaining.
