Palisades has been playing without senior center and Pepperdine commit Jane Nwaba, and has managed to reel off some big wins against Redondo Union, Santa Monica, and LACES. In the past month, Chaminade has beaten Marlborough, Orangewood Academy, and Alemany, with a close one-point loss to Harvard-Westlake.
The game was close throughout with neither team able to gain any separation. Chaminade has good size up front with Washington commit Alexis Whitfield and San Diego State commit Kimberly Villalobos, but Palisades did a solid job on the glass.
In the end, Chaminade squeaked out a 51-49 win that came down to free-throws. Here’s a look at some of the top standouts from both teams.
1. Kimberly Villalobos – Chaminade 2020
Villalobos is in her first season with the Eagles after transferring from Alemany. She’ll be off the San Diego State next season. She is a versatile player who can switch defensively from bodying up in the paint to covering wings on the perimeter. She’s a good passer playing in the high post and looking for Whitfield on cuts. She has good footwork offensively around the rim and can shoot from three.
2. Alexis Pettis – Palisades 2021
Pettis is an explosive guard who can put up points in a hurry. She can act as both the team’s primary ball-handler and facilitator, or she can do what she does best and that’s but the ball in the basket. Her strength lies in her ability to get to the rim. She has a quick first step and can get into the lane with ease. She’s a strong finisher at the rim and she can draw contact and get herself to the free-throw line.
3. Jasmine Rodriguez – Chaminade 2020
Rodriguez is a solid point guard for the Eagles. She does her job well in making sure the ball keeps moving and the offense doesn’t stagnate. She pushes the ball well in transition and is a good passer on the fast break. Knows when to speed up and slow down. She’s also an underrated scorer. She spots up and can shoot well from three-point range. The team has two solid scorers, but she’s capable of leading the team in scoring on any given night.
4. Sammie Arnold – Palisades 2021
Arnold is one of the Dolphins glue players who can do a little bit of everything on the court. In this particular game, she took advantage of Chaminade’s smaller guards in securing rebounds and getting easy looks at the rim. She also showed off her ability to shoot from distance, knocking down several three’s throughout the game. She’s a tough defender and makes a lot of hustle plays.
5. Lulu Lima – Chaminade 2020
Lima is a great complimentary player to the Eagles stars. She plays well off of them, knows her role, and plays it to the best of her ability. What stood out the most from her in this game as her ability to shoot from anywhere on the court. She has a good midrange game and can shoot off the dribble. She’s also a good three-point shooter and helps space the floor well for the Eagle’s bigs.
