The PGH rankings took a week off with the limited number of games over the Christmas break, but returns this week with an update.
Week 7 (week ending Jan. 5)
Division 1
1. Wayne (11-1) only a 51-47 loss to the nationally-ranked Mount Notre Dame keeps them from an unbeaten record. Wayne knocked off a very good Newark team on the road last week 53-48. They continue to get great production from their starters, and also received news that 2020 Jaida Wolfork has just committed to IUPFW. Travels to Trotwood on Wednesday before hosting Miamisburg on Saturday.
2. Fairmont (8-1) crushed a solid Westerville South team on Saturday 56-35 as Madison Bartley Madison Bartley 6'3" | C Fairmont High School | 2020 State OH led with 19, Kierra Thornton added 17 and Madeline Westbeld Madeline Westbeld 6'3" | SF Fairmont High School | 2020 State OH scored 14 with 12 boards. Bartley also grabbed 10 boards. Senior Kyndall Ketterer just verballed to Urbana University over the break. Travels to Springboro on Wednesday and Northmont on Saturday.
3. Springboro (9-1) over the break, they earned a big 70-67 win over North Central (IN), as 2021 Peyton Nation led with 22 and Jordan Hobbs Jordan Hobbs 5'9" | CG Springboro | 2021 State OH added 16. The next day, they fell to Hamilton Southeastern out of Fischers IN as Sydney Parrish dropped 35 against the Panthers. Boro was led by Nation with 19, Hobbs 12 and McKel Nation 10. Hosts Fairmont on Wednesday and heads to Centerville on Saturday.
4. Centerville (7-4) finished 2-1 on the east coast over the break. Cotie McMahon Cotie McMahon 5'11" | SG Centerville | 2022 #28 Nation OH scored 19 as they defeated St. Elizabeth (DE), Amy Velasco Amy Velasco 5'8" | CG Centerville | 2021 State OH dropped 15 to lead the Elks against St. Basil (PA) and freshman Kendal George Kendal George 5'9" | CG Centerville | 2023 State OH buried 6 threes with 18 points in their loss to Long Island Lutheran (NY). Heads to Lebanon on Wednesday and hosts Springboro on Saturday.
5. Bellbrook (10-2) big win over Kenton Ridge last week for their tenth win. Also had a good showing at the Kemba Classic at Lakota West. Travels to Wilmington on Monday and Franklin on Thursday before their second matchup this season against Valley View on Saturday.
On the Bubble: Butler, Sidney, Lebanon
Division 2
1. Carroll (9-2) lost a double overtime 74-72 game to Roger Bacon on Saturday to break their nine game winning streak. Beat perennial powers Tippecanoe and Valley View over the break. Megan Leraas dropped 27 in the loss, Ava Lickliter added 19 and Sarah Ochs Sarah Ochs 5'5" | CG Dayton Carroll | 2022 State OH 14. Hosts Northmont Monday, Alter on Wednesday and Purcell Marian on Saturday.
2. Valley View (9-3) beat Madison last week 65-39 as four players reached double figures led by Lauren Legate’s 15. Then defeated Oakwood 21-7 in a strange game on Saturday as Oakwood chose to slow the tempo of the game. Valley View hosts Monroe on Thursday and Bellbrook on Saturday.
3. Jonathan Alder (8-2) after a tough loss to good Dublin Coffman team out of Columbus, they defeated Tecumseh 57-53 to maintain the lead in the Central Buckeye Conference. Big non-conference game hosting Mechanicsburg on Tuesday, and travel to Shawnee on Saturday.
4. Eaton (10-1) Three good wins over the break including a 39-27 win at Brookville on Saturday in a game I attended. Always impressed with 2020 Bailey Shepherd (Indiana Tech signee) who had 10, and liked her 2023 cousin Lily Shepherd who scored 14 points including big points down the stretch. Four wins in a row and plays Oakwood on Thursday and Monroe on Saturday.
5. Tippecanoe (6-3) six wins in their last seven games, only loss came to #1 Carroll. Defeated Troy (40-25) and Sidney (50-39) over the break. 2020 Katie Salyer had a productive game against Sidney with 13 points (6-7 FG) 10 rebounds and five steals. Ashleigh Mader Ashleigh Mader 6'0" | CG Tippecanoe | 2021 State OH (2021) added 11. Hosts Butler on Wednesday (both teams 8-0 in conference play) and travels to Stebbins on Saturday.
On the Bubble: CJ, Dunbar, Trotwood Madison
Division 3
1. West Liberty Salem (6-1) after a long break, the Tigers returned to the court with a 15-point win against Greeneview, and another win against previously-unbeaten OHC team Greenon to maintain their top spot. 5-11 2021 Selena Weaver continues to impress. Host Madison Plains and Cedarville this week.
2. Arcanum (8-2) Trojans travel to Milton Union on Thursday after crushing Twin Valley South last week. Arcanum has three very tough games coming next week that will go a long way with their ranking. They play Valley View, Franklin Monroe and Versailles.
3. Versailles (9-4) huge win against New Bremen last week but then fell short to Franklin Monroe on Saturday despite 15 from Danielle Kunk, 11 from Brooke Stonebraker and 10 from Caitlin McEldowney. Tigers play New Knoxville on Thursday.
4. Anna (8-4) knocked off two solid teams the past two weeks, beating Waynesville and Miami East. The Rockets have Botkins on Tuesday and Fairlawn on Saturday.
5. Carlisle (9-1) they did lost to Waynesville before Christmas, but the Spartans then lost their fifth game of the season against Anna last week so they drop out of the top five. Earned a win against Dayton Christian 38-29 as Kaylee Dingee Kaylee Dingee 5'11" | PF Carlisle | 2021 OH scored 12 and Abby Goodpaster added 10. Indians host Madison on Thursday and travel to Preble Shawnee on Saturday.
On the Bubble: Madison, Waynesville, Greenon
Division 4
1(tie). Tri Village (11-0) the beat rolls on for the Patriots as they earn a huge win against Trinity in a holiday event, then blasted Bethel. Maddie Downing Maddie Downing 6'1" | C Tri-Village High School | 2020 OH put up some big numbers for TV against Trinity, a bigger school. Pats play Covington on Thursday and Miami East on Saturday.
1(tie). Fort Loramie (10-0) this team just doesn’t give up points. They only allowed 18 in their win against Botkins on Saturday. Deepest team in the state, they just keep coming at you. Travel to Fairlawn on Tuesday and host Russia on Saturday.
3. Mechanicsburg (11-0) I had the chance to watch them in person last weekend against a solid Catholic Central team, and they earned a hard fought 49-41 win. Kasey Schipfer is continuing to produce with 22 against Central. The Indians have a tough week ahead, traveling to D2 ranked Jonathan Alder on Tuesday then host Sylvie Sonneman and the Greeneview Rams on Thursday. They also play at Southeastern on Saturday.
4. Fort Recovery (8-2) had one of the most impressive weeks of any team this year. They traveled to a holiday tournament at Glen Oak and won their matchup, then defeated Minster stopping their long winning streak. Then headed to Liberty Benton and won in overtime. This team is playing well and move into the top five. 2020 Val Muhlenkamp Val Muhlenkamp 6'0" | C Fort Recovery High School | 2020 OH has led the way.
5(tie). Franklin Monroe (11-1) eight consecutive wins for the Jets as they look to contend for the second spot in the Cross County Conference behind Tri Village. The Jets travel to Tri County North and St. Henry this week.
5(tie). Marion Local (11-0) they join the top five with a perfect start to the season. The Flyers host Celina on Thursday and head to Parkway on Thursday. Juniors Heidi Rethman and Alana Pohlman along with sophomore Sami Hoelscher have led the way all around double figures.
