While Thunderbird tried its best to rally, the lead by Flagstaff proved to be too large to overcome. While Thunderbird is a solid team in the 4A division, Flagstaff is currently having an outstanding season, with it’s three losses coming at the hands of Winslow and 4A top dogs Seton Catholic Prep and Shadow Mountain.
Flagstaff started the game hot and immediately overwhelmed Thunderbird, jumping out to a 28-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Thunderbird worked to chip away at the huge lead Flagstaff had created, and sophomore Madi Peterson did a great job in leading the Chiefs efforts in the second quarter, but unfortunately they were still trailing 42-16 at the half.
The explosive offense of Flagstaff in the first half of the game was lead by freshman Miyah Verse, sophomore Gracelyn Nez and junior Emma Doskicz. Together, the trio scored a combined 33 of the teams 42 points going into the half.
Thunderbird made some adjustments at the half and tried its best to contain Flagstaff, but they still didn’t have the answer. Flagstaff managed to tack on another 16 points to the board before putting in all its backup players in to get some playing time.
Flagstaff frequently gets overlooked because of its geographical location, but make no mistake: these girls can play. Not only do they have a number of girls who are strong shooters, they also have a number of girls who have some size and are able to get rebounds, specifically, Miyah Verse.
When the playoffs begin, Flagstaff will likely surprise a few people somewhere down the line. Until then, the Eagles are looking at their remaining slate of games in hopes of finishing out the rest of the regular season strong.
