Free: 2021 Rankings Update (Preview)
The 2021 class has been steady amongst the top but several players have stepped their games up this season and have been rewarded with a bump up the charts. Prep Girls Hoops Maryland is here with the first rankings update of new year.
Top Three:
Azzi Fudd – St. John’s College #1
Azzi FuddAzzi Fudd has been in a class of her own since middle school and it looked like nothing could slow her down. As fate would have it no one is immune to the injury bug and Azzi’s greatness was sidelined by a knee injury last spring. She has recently returned an is back to her old form (maybe improved) leading her team in scoring in limited minutes of the bench. Her return takes the Cadets from the cellar of the league to a legitimate WCAC contender.
Jada Walker – New Hope Academy #2
Jada WalkerJada Walker bested Azzi in the Dick’s National Championship Game last season. This year she has been on an All-Met Player of the Year caliber pace putting up fantastic all around numbers with New Hope. Recently, in a strange turn of events, word is Jada has left the team and if she doesn’t return the Tigers hope at another championship run greatly diminishes. We are keeping our eyes and ears open on the future of Maryland’s #2 junior.
Saylor Poffenbarger – Middleton #3
Saylor PoffenbargerSaylor Poffenbarger is a six foot guard with range beyond the arc. The UConn commit has been playing well but under the radar out in Frederick County. She was recently on display at the Public School vs Private School Challenge as she helped secure the victory over her future teammate Mir McClean and Roland Park.
Stock Risers:
Kayla Thomas – Riverdale Baptist School
Kayla ThomasKayla Thomas transfer to Riverdale Baptist has transformed her from back up post player to a legitimate star. She snagged some double-doubles at She Got Game earning a MVP award and had similar performances at the Title IX. Kayla will surely be one of the most sought after bigs this spring.
Carrie McMahon – St. James School
Carrie McMahon was previously unranked in the class but made a name for herself at the Title IX grabbing the #33 spot as coaches repeatedly asked who she was. She is a scrappy guard on both ends and is able to score from long range and attack the basket. She has a sister on the team that we are keeping an eye on as well.
Parker Hill – Winston Churchill
Parker HillParker Hill has been dominating Montgomery County and should continue to do so as there aren’t many players in the county that can match up with her size and strength. She moved up to the #5 spot from sheer consistency her test will come in the state tournament as she will have to leave out of her comfort area and face more of what the state has to offer in terms of competition.
