The Bennington Badgers are off to their best start in almost a decade at 11-1, while Omaha Duchesne is on the opposite side of the spectrum, struggling along with a record of 1-11. In a game that featured alot of turnovers and fouls, especially in the first half, the Badgers overcame an off night around the basket to pull away in the second half and net a 69-43 victory. There is some nice talent on both sides, with much of the talent on Duchesne just figuring out how to play high school basketball at a high level.
Miley Prine (5’10” Senior, Bennington): Last week’s player of the week, Prine did not disappoint in this contest, ending the night with 28 points. Prine is quick off the bounce and does a great job of finishing around the basket with both hands. She is a good passer who is very athletic and finishes well against contact, garnering multiple +1 opportunities. Badger head coach John O’Connor has Prine attack the ball in their run and jump press, and she creates chaos. One of the better non-committed players in this year’s senior class, she is also a soccer standout; an NAIA school might be able to bring her on as a dual-athlete.
Taylor Sedlacek (5’7″ Sophomore, Bennington): Sedlacek is a pure point guard who does a great job of pushing the ball in Bennington’s high tempo attack. She does a really good job of keeping her head up and will snap off an accurate 40-50 foot pass if the defense is not active in transition. Sedlacek is a very good athlete, but struggled shooting the ball and does need to work on her shooting mechanics, but she is a young player that should only get better.
Abby Boyes (5’9″ Sophomore, Bennington): Boyes is a shooter who does not lack in confidence. She is a shot hunter who plays well off of Prine’s and Sedlacek’s athleticism. She struggled to hit shots early in this game, but she went through a stretch in the second half where she scored ten points in less than three minutes. She needs to work on her off the bounce game, as teams will crowd her catch and shoot game, but like Sedlacek, she is young and will only improve.
Lucy Schonlau (6’3″ Freshman, Omaha Duchesne): Foul trouble derailed alot of the efforts of Schonlau in the first half of this game, but she numbered at least five blocks in the contest and also showed nice footwork around the rim, finishing well, including a nice left handed hook shot from five feet out. She has nice timing on her shot blocking, and she will learn to avoid the silly fouls that she received. She has very good agility for a young player her size, and is a throwback, back to the basket post player.
Nicky Huss (6’1″ Freshman, Omaha Duchesne): Huss is a long, athletic player who will develop into a very nice player. Like Schonlau, she got into early foul trouble and eventually fouled out of the game. To compliment Schonlau, she needs to develop her face up game and stretch the defense to open up the lane. She did finish the game with a nice left handed hook shot, showing her dexterity. As Huss grows and matures, her and Schonlau have a chance to become a real dynamic duo in Class B.
Baylee Zakrzewski (5’11” Freshman, Omaha Duchesne): Zakrzewski had a very solid game Tuesday night, finishing well around the rim and hitting free throws efficiently. She is not as athletic as her teammates, but knows when to cut and where to be at off the ball, and her mental game compliments the physicality of Schonlau and Huss. Coach Brad Thomas will have to figure out a way to get these three players on the floor together.
