Woodinville entered into the game as the favorite with Kentridge being without USC signee Jordyn Jenkins. Kentridge hung in tough and scrapped to stay in the game, but Woodinville’s talent turned out to be too much as they took the victory 61-49.
Game Notes:
New prospect alert! 2022 5’11 SG Tatum Thompson (Woodinville) will most definitely be in our updated rankings. She is legitimately top 10 in the state for her class with more room for growth as she puts everything together and adds strength. Now onto her game; Tatum has a beautiful pull-up jumper and elevates off the floor very well, she is wiry and scrappy. She has a soft touch on her shot that will suit her well for the next level. She is thin, but an aggressive “go get it” kind of player. She scored 20 points and got those baskets in flurries. The most impressive part of her game was the 16 rebounds. It is not easy to grab 16 boards and she did so, while also leading the scoring drive for the Falcons. I did happen to catch Tatum on a good day, but the tools are all there for long-term success and she is a legitimate Division 1 prospect that will continue to get better with time.
2022 5’8 PG Veronica Sheffey (Woodinville) continues to impress every time that I see her. Her game continues to grow and mature at the point guard position, although there is still more room for growth versus intense pressure. Kentridge forced her into a game high 6 turnovers, but nothing she cannot learn from. The lefty point finished with 20 for the game and pulled down 8 boards and handed out 5 assists. Sheffey really balances out scoring and dishing well. All around, she appears like the kind of player that girls would want to play with. She has a nice stride and can turn the corner around the defense to get to the basket and finish with her strong left hand.
2021 5’10 PF Mia Hughes (Woodinville) chipped in 14 points, despite a cold shooting day. She also grabbed an impressive 12 rebounds, which she is able to do due to her outstanding motor and hands.
Woodinville led almost the entire way with just one lead change, but it was not their best all around performance. The fourth quarter was particularly sloppy for them. They struggled when Kentridge turned up their pressure and turned the ball over on multiple possessions, allowing Kentridge to get within 6 in the fourth after leading by double digits and appearing to run away with the game. Woodinville scored just 5 points for the first 6.5 minutes of the fourth quarter. With young guards, they will have to stay locked in mentally at all times, because those lapses could be the difference between winning state or not. Overall, they have all the tools to win 4A.
New Prospect alert! 2021 5’6 SG Amerie Pastores (Kentridge) had a really solid all around game for the Chargers. She drives to the basket hard, competes on defense and also showed the ability to hit the long range jumper. She finished 4/5 from the field and 2/2 at the line putting her at 11 points.
2020 5’7 PG Daylani Ballena (Kentridge) had a rough night shooting, but played some outstanding defense in the second half. Some of her passes were eye popping as usual. A lot of the scoring, defensive and passing responsibilities will be on her shoulders for the first time in her high school career with no Jenkins (injury) or Miller (graduated) around. She finished 11 points on the game.
2020 5’9 G Kiernan Denckla (Kentridge) is an unsigned senior still awaiting a college opportunity. Denckla had the best all around game for the Chargers finishing with a team high 12 points and 8 rebounds. Kentridge will need more performances like these and some other teammates to step up more in order for Kentridge to stay on track to return to state in smooth fashion.
2022 6’0 SF Naomi Hall-Schiffner finished with a team high 10 rebounds and played some good defense on Woodinville’s leading scorer on the year, picking up 2 blocked shots on her. Kentridge would benefit from more scoring out of Naomi as they need that inside-out presence she can bring.
- Southern Utah and Northern Arizona were among the colleges in attendance.
- Woodinville improved to 15-0 and Kentridge fell to 12-3
