Both teams advanced to the Final Four of the state tournament a year ago with Lincoln Prep finishing second and Career Academy finishing third. Several key players for both teams are back which made for a great matchup. In the end, Miller Career Academy came away with a 43-42 victory.
Best Senior: Amari Conn (Lincoln Prep) and Antuanae Garrett (Miller Career Academy): The 5’9” Conn is a talented shooting guard who is headed to TCU. She knocked down three 3-pointers on the day. The 5’6 Garrett is an excellent combo guard who combines ball handling and excellent shooting ability.
Best Junior: Chorus Davis (Lincoln Prep): The 5’7 guard was very good at attacking the basket as she consistently got to the free throw line. She attempted 10 free throws in the first half.
Best Sophomore: Kelsey Harris (Miller Career Academy): The 5’8 guard came off the bench to score 13 points, including the game winning 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to play. With a couple of teammates getting into early foul trouble, she came in and provided a big spark with her perimeter shooting.
Best Freshman: Delilah Pippen (Lincoln Prep): The youngest player on the floor more than held her own as she handled the ball with confidence and was not afraid to make big plays.
Best Rebounder: Jasia Nicholson (Lincoln Prep): The 5’10 forward did an excellent job on the boards as she used her size and strength to power her way to rebounds.
Best Shooter: Amari Conn 5’8” Lincoln Prep – The TCU commit displayed a confident stroke from long distance as she came off screens and got to the open spots to launch her jumpers. Kelsey Harris of Miller Career Academy gets a special mention here as well.
Best Play of the Game: Kelsey Harris (Miller Career Academy): After the Phoenix fell behind 41-40 and losing a 10 point lead, the sophomore sharpshooter came down and calmly drained a 22 footer with 25 seconds left for what proved to be the winning bucket.
Best Shot Blocker: Jayrissa Grayson (Miller Career Academy) – The athletic 5’9 2020 forward is a tough all-purpose player who can rebound and defend. She blocked a game high three shots as she showcased her athleticism.
Best Unsung Player: Raya Talley (Miller Career Academy) – The 5’10” 2020 forward sat out much of the first half with two fouls, but she came on strong with eight points in the second half and some key plays in the fourth quarter.
Best Competitor: Anjanee Bradley (Lincoln Prep) – The 5’4″ 2020 point guard was the smallest player on the court, but she was always in the middle of the action grabbing rebounds that she had no business getting amongst the taller players. She was just determined to get the basket. She also has excellent speed and quickness i the open court.
