To commemorate the life & Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – The MLK Bash hosted 12 of the areas top Girls High School teams on the Saturday before his birthday is celebrated. This is the 5th Annual event that is hosted by Carey Rich, former USC Gamecock Basketball player that currently provides radio play by play for their games, the games are played at Eau Claire High School in Columbia, SC. I will be highlighting the standout sophomore (Class of 2022) players in this years event.
- Shar’Dasia Ziegler – 5’5” – Guard – Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School – Dynamic Playmaker that was all over the court during their 47 – 41 Victory over Ridge View High School, she finished the game with 15 Pts – 5 Assists – 5 Steals – and she dropped some amazing dimes throughout the game. This team is off to a 15 – 1 start to there season and this young lady is a major reason why, she runs the team but also adds a toughness that is needed in tight games, she plays the game with such joy like a Kid on Christmas morning.
- Anala Nelson Anala Nelson 5'8" | CG Lower Richland | 2022 State SC – 5’7” – Guard – Lower Richland High School – Anala is a Lockdown defender that has the ability to takeover games with her 2 way ability, there is a lot on her shoulders with the loss of 2 senior starters for the rest of the season. Anala was able to keep her team in the game against the returning State Finalist in Southpointe, they would eventually lose 41 – 34 after cutting it to 2 Points with 2 Minutes left. Anala finished with 12 Pts – 3 Assists – 2 Steals, despite receiving numerous double teams throughout the game.
- Imani Williams Imani Williams 5'6" | PG Dreher | 2022 State SC – 5’6” – Guard – Dreher High School – Floor general that was able to get her teammates in position to pull off a BIG UPSET!! She controlled the pace of play all game and was able to hold off Sumter HS down the stretch for a 45 – 44 Victory. Imani is a lightning Quick guard that can leave people in there stance with her ball handling ability, she finished the game with 14 Pts – 3 Assists – 2 Steals, but it felt much bigger than that, she has taken a huge step forward in my eyes as a potential High Major Division 1 prospect.
- Ashlyn Watkins Ashlyn Watkins 6'4" | PF Cardinal Newman | 2022 State #11 Nation SC – 6’2” – Forward – Cardinal Newman – Ashlyn has the ability to control the outcome of the game from the defensive end of the floor, she has the range to block or intimidate shots because of her insane wingspan. Ashlyn was in early foul trouble and sat for most of the 1st 8 minutes with 2, but was able to stay clear of any more fouls the rest of the game. The most Dominant interior player in the Carolinas took over and finished with 15 Pts – 13 Reb – 4 Blocks, she ran the floor, handled the ball in transition and showed why every Major school in America is interested in her services at the Collegiate level.
- Ariana Wilkes Ariana Wilkes 6'2" | C Spring Valley | 2022 State SC – 6’2” – Post – Spring Valley High School – Developing into a strong presence in the Paint, Long arms allow her to block shots out of her area and is a consistent interior scorer. This game gave her the matchup with Ashlyn Watkins Ashlyn Watkins 6'4" | PF Cardinal Newman | 2022 State #11 Nation SC that some were excited to see, she finished with good numbers – 16 Points – 6 Rebounds, but was unable to lead her team to victory in a 59 – 37 Loss to Cardinal Newman. There is a huge ceiling for Ariana, getting stronger and more fluid with the ball in her hands will increase her stock with Division 1 Coaches.
