Continue ReadingAfter the new year, we plan to start covering the action from the day in a different way than we did in the first half of the season. We noticed that most people did not care to read a singular story on two teams of which they have never heard of, thus the Daily Dive was born. Each night, or following afternoon, we will post a Daily Dive on the previous day’s action with headlines and top performers, given there is enough substance to run one. To follow is our Daily Dive from the games that took place on 1/14/20.
Grinnell takes down North Polk, 75-66
In one of their biggest games of the season, Grinnell hosted one of the top teams in 3A on Monday night and came away with a win. They were led by senior Sarah Gosselink with 16 points as she knocked down four 3-pointers and also added in five assists. Grinnell also got a great contribution from sophomore Ivey Schmidt who also led the team with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor. Sophomore Meredith McKnight had 14 points while McKenna McKnight pitched in 10 points. The leading scorer coming into the game for Grinnell was freshman Haidyn Hull and she added in eight points for Grinnell. They continue to ride balanced scoring to the win. Grinnell has a relatively easy schedule coming up the rest of this month after playing a tough schedule through the first month. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them 12-4 heading into February.
Waukee beats previously unbeaten Southeast Polk
Southeast Polk and Waukee matched up in a great game that saw Waukee shoot themselves into a win. Southeast Polk’s Grace Larkins, a South Dakota commit, scored 30 points in the game but was unable to keep up with the torrid shooting pace that Waukee showed. For the game, Waukee shot at a 63.4 percent clip and shot 66.7 percent from behind the arc. After trailing by three at the half, Waukee turned it on in the third quarter outscoring Southeast Polk by 13 points. Junior Lindsey Kelderman had a team-high 19 points on 6-of-7 from the floor including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Twin sister Peyton Kelderman decided to match her with 19 points of her own on 6-of-10 from the floor. Drake commit Katie Dinnebier added 17 points in the game before fouling out. Waukee was 26-of-41 from the floor and 10-of-15 from deep. This was a statement win for Waukee as a lot of people might be counting them out still.
Katie Keitges and Maggie Wilkins each score 33 in Knoxville win
The best scoring backcourt in the state filled the stat sheet once again on Monday night. Both Keitges and Wilkins scored 33 points in a 72-64 win over Pella Christian. The pair combined for 55 of the team’s 63 shots on the night and ended with 66 points, with only nine of those coming from the free-throw line. Night in and night out you know you have to stop this duo to win the game, and no team has been able to do it so far. I am not sure if there is any team other than Carlisle that will be able to stop these two guards from scoring the ball at a high rate.
- Sophomore Meredith Rieker scored 21 points in a Valley win
- Junior Kailey Jones scored 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for AHSTW in their win
- Senior Kendall Nead scored 23 points in Johnston’s win
- Senior Molly Hoekstra scored 24 points in the Carlisle win
- Junior Annika Headington scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished 8 assists in the Waukon win
