Continue ReadingJanuary is coming to an end so this is as good a time as any to recap on who has been the best girls basketball players around the state. The season is winding down and tournaments are beginning. The sample size is not small so these accomplishments are incredible. Here are the leaders in statistics through January 27.
Leianya Massenat (2020) | Trenton: 363 points
Massenat has been the best scorer of the season so far this season. She leads the state in total points by a slim margin with 363 points. She has scored 30 or more points in six straight games and seven overall. Massenat’s season-high of 37 points came in a win over Lawrence.
2. Kristina Donza (2020) | Jackson Memorial: 346 points
3. Kiley Capstraw (2022) | West Orange: 346 points
Makoye Diawara (2020) | Bayonne: 242 rebounds
Diawara has been a double-double machine for Bayonne during their 14-2 season. What does that mean? She has a double-double in all 16 games this season and even has two 20-20 games. Diawara has been impossible to keep off the boards on both sides of the court. Bayonne is a tough team to beat because of this.
2. Mackenzie O’Brien (2020) | South Plainfield: 203 rebounds
3. Kaelonn Wilson (2021) | Piscataway: 197 rebounds
Eniya Scott (2022) | Bayonne: 116 assists
Scott is second to Diawara in points on Bayonne’s roster. She leads the team and state in assists. The sophomore has displayed her ability to be a true point guard and run an offense at a high-level. She has dished out five or more assists in all 16 games for Bayonne this season.
2. Damaris Rodriguez (2020) | Secaucus: 107 assists
3. Eliana Huancaya (2020) | Kearny: 96 assists
Saniah Caldwell (2022) / Jordan Janowski (2020) | Saddle Day River: 95 steals
Is there a better defensive team than Saddle Day River this season? They have the co-leaders in steals around New Jersey. Caldwell has been one of the best sophomores in the state this season and is one of 10 players with 300 or more points to date.
2. Emily Alers-Gonzalez | Newark East Side: 94 steals
Nahali Tittle (2020) | Teaneck: 63 blocks
The best shot blocker so far this season resides on Teaneck this season. Tittle has blocked four or more shots in every game this season and has five or more in eight games. Her most recent game set a new season-high with seven blocks in a win over Dwight-Morrow.
2. Tianna Whitney (2020) | Edison: 62 blocks
3. Katy Gashlet (2021) | Westwood: 58 blocks
Abigail Scheidel (2020) | Nutley: 55 3-pointers
Scheidel has filled up the stat sheet in multiple ways this season. She has one of the craziest statistical games this season when she finished with 26 points and 23 assists in a win over Arts. Scheidel leads the state in three-pointers made. She has made five or more three’s in four games this season including two games with seven.

3. Saniah Caldwell (2022) | Saddle Day River: 46 3-pointers
