With so many teams jumbled towards the middle of both classes, there are lots of opportunities for teams to earn quality wins on a nightly basis.
Here are last week’s teams of the week:
Fargo Shanley
The Deacons took two losses in mid-December and have since turned the corner and are right on track to contend at the top of the EDC. Fargo Shanley won twice last week, beating a frisky West Fargo Sheyenne team (which turned around and beat Fargo Davies, another EDC contender) before ending the week with a solid overtime win over Grand Forks Red River. Reile Payne was terrific in that one, going for 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and nine steals.
Thompson
The Tommies reminded folks around the state that they are very much a legitimate contender in Class B still, picking up a win over a top-five ranked team in Four Winds/Minnewaukan. They allowed just 39 points in that game. They suffered no letdown, blowing out North Border and Hillsboro/Central Valley on Thursday and Saturday.
Trenton
The Trenton Tigers went into the week without playing in a game decided by less than 30 points. While impressive, the lack of a win against a team with a winning record could give pause. Consider that test passed, as the Tigers beat a state-tournament quality Hettinger/Scranton team 56-53 on Saturday. Hettinger/Scranton ended Trenton’s undefeated run last season in the first round of the state tournament and with both teams returning key pieces from a year ago, it’s a game we could see again come March.
