Who doesn’t love power rankings? Here are midseason power rankings for the Player of the Year in the EDC:
Reile Payne, Fargo Shanley
The easy frontrunner for the Player-of-the-Year honor in the EDC at this point, Payne leads the league in scoring (20.6 points per game), rebounding (10.6 rebounds per game) and steals (6.3 steals per game). She’s efficient inside and out. She makes her teammates better. And she’s got the Deacons towards the top of the EDC. Fargo Shanley relies on her excellence as much as any team in the league and she makes them a legitimate top-five team in the state.
Jes Mertens, Devils Lake
Mertens isn’t putting up ridiculous numbers (solid but not crazy) but her presence on the floor is paramount and she’s the catalyst for a Devils Lake team that looks like a state title contender. She’s getting it done in a big way on both ends of the floor, averaging 14.7 points and 4.5 assists plus 5.7 steals per night.
Ryleigh Wacha, Fargo Davies
Fargo Davies is towards the top of the EDC and Wacha has been the biggest reason why. The junior forward has taken her game to another level this winter, averaging 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds. She’s incredibly efficient, converting on 58 percent of her field goal attempts while playing sound defense. The Eagles have a chance to get to the state tournament and she’s been all-league good.
McKenna Becher, West Fargo
West Fargo’s got a shot at a top-four spot in the EDC and Becher has been terrific all around. On a team with a lot of young talent, she’s providing tangible production and making an intangible impact with regards to her leadership and two-way ability. She’s averaging15 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists while converting on nearly 50 percent of her shots.
Hadley Huber, Fargo Shanley
Huber’s missed a few games but her impact on the Deacons lineup cannot be overstated. She’s averaging 12.9 points, a league-high 5.4 assists, shoots nearly 40 percent from the 3-point line, gets to the free throw line regularly and creates turnovers by the opposition. She’s the second-most valuable player on her own team, but she’s one of the best players in the EDC.
