We took a drive out to Covina, California on Saturday afternoon to watch some good girls basketball in a nice gymnasium with some great coaches who care about their girls and want to help them succeed in anyway possible. I arrived to the gym, I was greeted by Oscar Silva, he is the assistant girls basketball coach for Northview High School and he works alongside his brother Danny Silva who is the Head Girls Basketball Coach. They were very hospitable and went out of their way to make this partnership work for the both of us. I sat and watch the following games and took notes on specific players in that gym and decided to write my evaluations on the following kids. I appreciate the kind gesture from the two gentlemen, but I have to say something to them, “That loose meat sandwich was off the chain, I will be back for some more of that. Thanks for showing me and my staff a good time.
Final Score: Vista Murrieta 48, Colony 42
Key players for Vista Murrieta:
2020, 5’8, SG, Sara Rich – is a dynamic do it all guard that I witness play at this event and she is still getting better as a senior, she could handle the ball with confidence, she shot the ball well and was a decent defender on an off the ball. I talked with her after the game and she was not even sure if she wanted to continue playing, but I reasured her that she can get a full-ride somewhere with her skillset on the floor.
Key players for Colony:
2020, 6’2, C, Cheyenne Forney (University of Denver Commit) – she is very good, she has the size, the confidence, the skillset down low and also the sense to rebound the ball and push it like a guard. She was dominant in the post, she was dominant on the defensive end of the floor, blocking shots and doing any and everything for her team. Definitely a leader on the floor and showed it with each and every play she made for her team. Denver is getting a good one here.
2022, 5’7, SG, Sydney Padilla – This girl is very unorthodox in her skillset on the floor, she does not look like the kind of girl who can play basketball, but man this kid is a player. She shot the ball well from all three levels well and impressed us with her determination to lot let her team lose the game. She has a great frame for the game and is very young, she has a real future in this game if she continues to improve each and every year, we will be watching Sydney and will also be adding her to our rankings in the next few months as a sophomore shooting guard.
Final Score: Eisenhower 70, Knight 52
Key players for Eisenhower:
2023, 6’1, SF, Hemingway Sa’lah – she is definitely a player in our book, she is a big bodied forward type with a nice game to boot. She can dominate in the paint with some good footwork and is tough as nails, when it comes to playing hard and going thru girls to get to the basket. She is skilled and is improving with each and every game, sat down with her mom in the stands and watch this girl go to work, humble kid as well.
2021, 5’7, SG, Briana Lizardi – Briana is a tough kid that can shoot the ball from the midrange as well as the three ball, did not see her get to the rim much, but she is more than capable of that as well. Nice body frame for a prospect and was quite agile on the floor and showed athleticism. She is a bonefide shooter though, believe that.
Final Score: Palos Verdes 51, La Canada 34
Key players for Palos Verdes:
2022, 5’6, G, Brooklyn Simpson – She was another slender and lanky guard on the floor that had a lot of heart as well, she drove to the rim with some success and was a pretty good ball handler that challenged the press. She shot the ball well with good form and was a decent defender on the floor.
2021, 5’4, PG, Kelsey Hatamiya – She is a crafty guard that is not afraid of any opponent on the floor, she is fearless and will mix it up with anyone on the floor. Went to the basket and scored against the contact, she shot the ball when open and had good form, she handled the ball well against the press. Love her heart she has.
Key players for La Canada:
2021, 5’6, SG, Alyssa Miyamoto – Impressed us with her skillset in the game, she knocked down open shots on the floor and played very good defense for her team. She got the rim, made good passes and was generally all around a good player for her team. Played really hard and really competed on the floor.
Other Players that Caught Our Eyes at this event:
2020, 5’3, PG, Northview High School, Gabby Valdez – Gabby is a player, she showed everyone in the gym that she is a tough, gritty, crafty and shifty point guard that can play against any type of competition. She shot the ball well beyond the three line, most times from about 24 feet, she could get her shot off against anyone and it was nothing but a big splash. She is defensively talented and she is proficient at scoring from all three-levels on the floor. Coaches take a good look at this kid, she can play.
2020, 5’11, PF, Northview High School, Giselle Garcia – Giselle is a monster in the paint, she is dominate on the boards and is skilled to score with good footwork inside. What she also does well is she can score it from the midrange jumper from the stripe and then can step back and hit the three ball in your face. She scored it with ease in the game we watch and none of the girls guarding her could matchup one on one. Giselle is a college prospect, play close attention to her.
