Player Spotlight 2020 Ericca Richardson
The blur in my head keeps popping to the now but 7 years ago when I saw a variety of talented players in the 5th or heading to the 6th grade, I knew this class would be special. Several areas around Texas have different mindsets about basketball on the girls side and the numerous competitive activities that have gone on for the younger ages in the Metroplex area have been ahead of the pack all century and probably longer but I only go back to when I started watching, wouldn’t want to fall into the variety of those embellish over and over and one thing I will always keep real is talent and progression and watching Trinty Christian guard Ericca Richardson apply both has been an absolute treat as she heads to the University of New Orleans after this season
Ericca RichardsonI caught up with Ericca over the summer and an NCAA Certified event and she put on a show in front of wall to wall college coaches and although I hadn’t seen her in a couple of years, that growth on the court just stood out, from the mid to long-range, to attacking the basket, she had just taken her game to a different level but her desire to play defense baseline to baseline including playing the passing lane should much of her mental toughness which doesn’t surprise me since her mom, Clotee (Cowans) Richardson, was not only a track star but an Olympian as well
To show me I wasn’t seeing a mirage, her Trinity Christian squad came down to a tournament in the Houston area last November and her 3 point range had extended beyond NBA range and as I spoke with her dad, Gene Richardson, about the extended range he told me how she’s constantly working and for me, seeing is definitely believing and she showed me. Her Trinity Chrisrttrian school team is one of the best nonpublic programs in the state and to be honest, can definitely compete because besides Ericca, they have 3 other D1 signees on the squad, the team has won back to back state championships and Ericca showed the show in high school wasn’t over as she recently dropped 40 in one of the Metroplex holiday tournaments
Ericca RichardsonI asked Ericca a few things such as how long she had been playing and why she chose UNO and her response was ” I’ve been playing for 6 years from team to team and I chose New Orleans because it was very family-oriented and I love the program” and I definitely get that as New Orleans is on the rise especially after pulling off some big upsets so far this season. Not only is she an outstanding player but an outstanding student as well and she plans on becoming a sports psychologist after basketball and as her game continues to rise, so does her spot PGH Texas Top 100
