Continue ReadingThe 7th Annual Presion Showcase MLK Classic 2020 was a nice event put on by Orangewood Academy Head Coach Leslie Aragon and his staff featuring some of the best teams in the area from the OC to LA. The lineup consisted of the following teams; Xavier Prep, Maranatha, Buena Park, Corona Santiago, Marlborough, Yucaipa, Rosary Academy, Saint Anthony, Esperanza, Troy, Chaminade and Orangewood Academy.
Chaminade 59 Orangewood Academy 54
2020, 6’3, SF, Chaminade HS, Alexis Whitfield Alexis Whitfield 6'2" | SF Chaminade Prep | 2020 State CA 19pts on the night; Alexis is one of those special post players that comes along once in a lifetime, she is gifted in all ways on the basketball floor. She is skilled to score from all three levels on the floor and it’s just a delightful player to watch. She is what you wanna call a point forward, Magic Johnson was called a point forward in his day, that’s how special she is.
2020, 6’2, SG, Chaminade HS, Kimberly Rodriguez 14pts on the night; Kim is that do-it-all player that is gonna do all the things that do not show up in the statbooks, she is tough, she is a warrior, she is always one of the best players on the floor. Her shooting ability is great, she can get to the rim with crafty moves and she can spot up an shoot the ball from anywhere on the court. She makes her teammates better and always talking to her teammates during the game. With her return to the roster for Chaminade, this make them better each and every game they play. (Committed to San Diego State University).
2020, 5’7, SG, Orangewood Academy, Sydney Gandy Sydney Gandy 5'5" | PG Los Alamitos | 2020 State CA 25pts on the night; Sydney is dynamic to watch and a pure-shooter in every sense of the word, she can shoot off the catch, the dribble and also with the midrange pull up. This makes her so dangerous on the floor, if you go for the pump-fake your done or if you are guarding on the perimeter and your hands go down, it is lights out, she is all money. What I would lik to see more from her is getting to the rim, but she is more than capable of doing it, but it does not happen often. (Committed to Idaho).
2022, 5’5, PG, Orangewood Academy, Kristol Caldwell 12pts on the night – Kristol is a firecracker on the floor, she is always on the attack and knows only one speed and that is going-hard. She is a crafty lefty ball handler with speed and quickness like no other in her class, she is also a very strong individual on the attack to the rim. She gets to the rim and finishes thru contact as well as making some of the most unorthodox shots you will see on the floor. Her defensive game is tight and she is a stopper in every sense of the word. Look for good things from this kid.
Troy 60 Esperanza 42
2020, 5’9, Troy HS, Anaiya Tu’ua 12pts on the night – This is the kid that makes Troy girls basketball go, she is the catalyst to this team in each and every way. She sets everyone up and can score if she needs to help the team win games, that is what she showed me in this game. She has a decent handle, does not turnover the ball, she can penetrate and drive to the rim, pull up for jumpers and knock down the occasional three pointer. She is down right tough and is one of the most skilled girls on the floor as a guard, she also plays soccer at an elite level as well.
2020, 5’9, SF, Esperanza HS, Emily Briggs 16pts on the night – Chloe is the enforcer for Esperanza and she does it well, she rebounds, she defends the post players and also a threat to score for her team. She has a nice size frame for the post play and is quite agile for her size and body type, she can shoot the ball from the perimeter and also take the ball and drive it to the hoop. She will play at the next level, but I just have not pinpointed at what level.
2022, 5’6, Esperanza HS, Alyssa Kubo 13pts on the night – This kid was a shooter supreme and her showed she has a motor that runs very high when playing the game of basketball. She is a slender guard with some athleticism, she is a menace on the defensive end of the floor and is light out from behind the three point line. If you leave her open, she will knock down the shot, but what is also good about her is her ability to pull up off the bounce. This kid will get better each year and Esperanza is a team that can beat you if you do not get a handle on their shooters.
2022, 5’10, SG, Troy HS, Hannah Stines Hannah Stines 5'9" | SG Troy HS | 2022 State CA with 20pts on the night – Hannah is a typical shooting guard that has a knack for knocking down the long three ball at the end of periods and shot clocks, I saw her do this multiple times and it is still a mystery how that is possible for her. She has a nice dribble drive game, she can stop and pull up on her defender with no problems, but she needs to attack the rim more to open up the game for her post presence in the middle. Those drive and dish opportunities are there and it would also help her assist ratio on the team. She is battle tested and ready for war each and every time she steps on the floor.
Rosary Academy 61 Saint Anthony 38
2020, 5’9, CG, Rosary Academy, Nicole Rodriguez Nicole Rodriguez 5'5" | PG Chicopee | 2022 NewE with 16pts on the night – Nicole is a tough player and individual for Rosary, she has to put on her hard-hat each and every time she touches the floor, because that is who she is. She can knock down the three pointer with consistency and is one of the better defenders on the team as it stands now. Her shot was struggling earlier in the season, but it does seem to be more consistent as of league time contention. She can handle the ball well, does not turn it over and is can score from all three levels on the court. (Committed to Loyola Marymount University).
2021, 5’6, SG, St. Anthony HS, Meghan McIntyre Meghan McIntyre 5'6" | SG St. Anthony HS | 2021 State CA with 10pts on the night – Meghan is a true shooter, she is knocking down shots at a high clip this season, she is the main shooter at St. Anthony High. She is quick, strong, handles the ball well and can get to the rim occasionally, but her strength is pulling up for the three ball as well as midrange shots too. She is also defensive minded and does a great job defending her opponents in tough games.
2022, 5’5, CG, St. Anthony HS, Bridgette McIntyre with 9pts on the night – Bridgette is the younger sister of Meghan and like her sister, she can knock down the three ball as well. She is scrappy, handles well and is also a good defender, she can get to the rim and is a really hard nose hustle player with a great skill set on the floor.
2022, 5’6, SG, Rosary Academy, Kaylee Byon Kaylee Byon 5'6" | PG Rosary Academy | 2022 State CA with 20pts on the night – Kaylee is a unique in her own right, she is just as tough as other players, but Kaylee has a swag about her game on the court. She plays with a smooth operator with nice handles, nice pull up game and a fierce drive to the rim to finish thru contact. She is also a good defender and it shows when she is locking down the other teams guard. Uses her body size well, fairly quick with the ball and even quicker with her first step to the rim. She will continue to improve each and every game she plays, look out for this one in the Spring and Summer.
Marlborough 60 Yucaipa 34
2020, 5’8, CG, Marlborough HS, Parker Montgomery Parker Montgomery 5'10" | SG Marlborough | 2020 State CA with 25pts in this game – I arrived at the halftime mark, but was still able to see Parker go to work on the floor, she is a tough guard with a nice solid body frame that can take hits going to the rim. She can shoot the ball out to the three line with some consistency and has a knack for scoring the ball. Mid range is developing, but being a threat to score at all times is a great attribute to have in your toolkit. (Committed to UCSD)
2020, 5’6, SG, Marlborough HS, Grace Estrada with 14pts in this game – Grace could score the ball from all three levels on the floor, she was a hustle player that had a terrific motor which is a great skill to have that most coaches admire first. She defended well on and off the ball, understood the term help-side defense, which is also another great skill to have that coaches admire.
2020, 5’5, PG, Yucaipa HS, Leanne Cuevas with 9pts in the game – Leanne as another good guard on the floor for Yucaipa, she did everything she could to keep her team in the game. She made layups, she hit a shot or two and hustled on defense.
