At 5’6, Hulbert is a strong guard who has increased her scoring every year of varsity basketball. After averaging six points as a sophomore, she increased her production to 11 points per game last season and is leading the Spartans at 13.2 ppg this season.
“My high season last year was a great experience,” Hulbert says. “ It was a year of transition for me. I became more of a scorer. I was moved from being the primary ball handler to playing off the ball.”
After losing in the district championship game to Hazelwood Central, FHC entered the 2019-20 season with high expectations despite losing two four-year starters from last year.
“My mentality this year is, ‘Whatever it takes,’” Hulbert says. “ That means helping in offense, defense, rebounding, and score. I have to contribute in all these areas.
“As for as the team, play together and give maximum effort For me, I expect to give supreme effort and give my team whatever it needs. I look forward to playing Rockbridge and Hazelwood Central. They both got the best of us last year.
They are really good teams. The only way we get better is by playing really good teams and we look forward to the challenge.”
This past summer Hulbert competed for Player’s First, her second straight offseason with the program.
“I had a good time playing summer ball, I had been with Player’s First for two years so there were several returning girls,” she says. “We did a lot of traveling and played a very competitive schedule. The traveling was tiring but also rewarding.
“Summer ball helped me for my senior season by allowing me to play off the ball. The system was free flowing and more of a fast pace. It allowed me to speed up my decision making and improve my current skill level.”
Hulbert says her father has had the biggest impact on her basketball career to date.
“Ever since I was little, he has been my biggest supporter,” she said. “My dad is there when I want to work out at 6 am on a Saturday morning or just when I need advice. He keeps me grounded and in the right frame of mind. I also learned a lot from Coach Mike Scott. He reminded me that doing the little things matter.”
A fan of WNBA standouts Victoria Vivians and Arike Ogunbowale, Hulbert says she can take away different aspects of both player’s game and make them her own.
Hulbert has signed to play at UMSL and plans to major in Computer Science.
