In this article, we take a look at our #8 ranked player for the class of 2022, Emajin McCallop. A 5’7 guard for the Bishop Miege Lady Stags and member of Next Level Eclipse grassroots program.
In an already loaded program, that year in and year out continues to compete for State Championships, it makes it a bit easier to step into a role with no weight bearing on you. For Emajin, even knowing it’s not much pressure she continues to push herself to higher standards. I wanted to know how she felt going into her sophomore year and what she thought she brought to the table that would help the Lady Stags.
“I would describe my game as a quick point guard who makes good passes and can finish. My last season was great. My team and I went 24-0, we were 25 in the nation, and won a state championship. During that season I had plenty of time to grow and get the feel of balancing high school sports. I definitely had a great role model, Johnni Gonzalez, to look up to for my first year.”
Miege is a team that always gets the best from everyone they play. They continue to build rivals from local schools and has even done some traveling to compete against some nationally-ranked opponents.
“This season we started off strong in our feeder few games. We just went to a good tournament in Arkansas where we lost our firs game in the championship. I feel like our team is still very good this year and we have very good chemistry with each other. One of our biggest matchups will be st Thomas Aquinas. We have always been rivals and each year it’s always a good game. Some other good matchups will be Lincoln prep, Olathe north, and the Oklahoma tournament.”
In a world full of distractions that keep this generation from reaching their potential, kids at times lose sight of their goals. Emajin continues to stay grounded and humbled which allows her to remain focused on hers.
“The biggest influence in my basketball career is God. God shows me how I can use my talent that he has given me and spread his word at the same time. I live by his word and scriptures everyday. Another big influence has definitely been my mom because she will tell me the truth if I’m having a bad game or I need to pick it up. Also my dad because he always puts in the time to go work out with me and shoot. I enjoy watching college basketball because I love the atmosphere of the fans and players. Everyone has one dream and they all fight with their team. You also see how one person or team can bring the whole community together. I try to take away the simple stuff. Like their vision of the court, When the do back doors, or a simple pull up jump shot.
The Lady Stags are currently 6-2 and heading into a rival match up January 29, 2020 against St. Thomas Aquinas. Look for Emajin to continue getting better and helping Miege push for another State Run.
